Default Another article of mine hits the web

My riding season is almost over, but my writing season is not.

Check out my latest article, a review of anti-fog treatments, at webbikeworld

I dunno what the fog you're talking about but it got me pretty steamed up.

Nice article!

Might I add something for your Empirical quest?

My Shoei RF1000....Stock shield equipped......without breath guard in place, fogs up easily, but is easily dispersed when in motion. At a light.....fogs up in the morning just as nice as you please. The second you move, it's gone.

Install the breath guard.......little if any fog appears while sitting still, and again, in motion, none.

My HJC fogs up while riding, sitting still, or just looking at it if it's cold. The front vent is like mammaries on a bull. Useless. You have to ride with the visor cracked. Which is only effectively up to about 45 mph or so, and then physics puts an end to the visor being open.

I've taken a hint from a mod here on the forum....Louis. I believe he mentioned treating the visor with ordinary dish soap. I've done it. I wash the visors with Palmolive....can't really say if the stuff has any effect one way or the other....

All my tests are done with the breath guard on my Shoei -- which I've found isn't terribly effective. i have a feeling the only really effective solution is a tight-fitting mask, but I will keep trying things and writing about 'em.

Weird.

Hmmn...maybe the breath guard is only effective with certain facial types???

Do you have your chin guard installed?

(Note...I've transferred the breath guard to the HJC before, and it's a vast improvement for fog in the HJC.)

I ride with a Balaclava (face mask) in January and February. For the record, I like wearing it, but I found it to be more of nuisance for fog (in the HJC, haven't worn it in the Shoei yet) since the air is blown right up my cheeks and into the face shield.

GREAT article Barbarian

Congrats on getting the article posted. You have done a really good job.

Where else can we find your writing? What else do you do articles on?

BTW, on the fogging subject...I've used dish-soap with some success. Many riders recommend good old fashion spit too. That's a trick used on scuba goggles by some divers, I think.

Peace.

I used to write for a certain national TV show that broadcast out of Times Square.. but then I left Manhattan and moved back to the city I grew up in. My day job is writing and producing TV news.

Are you folks using straight dish soap, or do you dilute it, or do you just throw your visor in with the after-dinner dishes?

I once wiped it down with dish soap.

By and large though, I just throw the soap directly on the visor, run a little water over it "scrub" with a soft cloth. Dry with appropriate means.

Like I said, I can't say whether it helps with the fog or not, but it does make for a somewhat (perceived) slicker surface. It seems as if bugs hit the shield and slide off immediately. Of course, easing the cleaning process the next time.

I only apply the soap (no water) to the interior of the facemask. No sense putting it on the outside since fogging is all I'm trying to prevent.

I apply the dish soap using a soft cloth to spread a light coat over the entire inside of the shield. I then take a clean soft cloth and wipe the inside of the shield to remove any excess soap. Note: don't wipe too hard or you'll remove all the soap.

The result should leave a very little bit of "film" on the screen. This will not hurt your visibility nor will it provide problems with lights at night. The light film seems to help prevent the fogging....just make sure it's an even coat of soap on the shield and don't leave any areas drowning in the stuff.
