Yeah, it will be fun !!! I think I will wear my ski pants over my regular riding pants. It's going to be coooold over the stretch between Stevenson's Ranch and Bakersfield.....

So, I finally put a few miles on my new bike.

Last night, I rode from Emeryville over to Walnut Creek, CA and back. It's not very far (about 16 miles each way), but it was my first "real" ride on the bike, and it was already dark outside.

Today, I had arranged to meet up with Tom (wookie) on his "mini Iron-Butt" from LA to San Francisco and back. He gave me a call when he hit his first fuel stop, and we agreed to meet at his second stop. I took off from Emeryville, down the I-580 then on to I-5, and we met up in Santa Nella, a microscopic town in the San Joaquin Valley in central California.

We met there, then headed back up to San Francisco to have lunch at Fisherman's Wharf. In Santa Nella, it was sunny and warm. As we got farther north, the weather became more overcast, and by the time we hit Oakland, it was raining pretty constantly.

Anyhow, after more than 200 miles on the Sprint, I have to say, I'm impressed. That bike has incredible power - it cruses beautifully at 75 mph, and can hit 100+ without any effort. After coming from a naked bike, having a fairing to hide behind makes long freeway rides a lot more comfortable. The only negatives I've notices so far are 1) the lousy gas mileage, and 2) the heat coming off the engine when crawling along in traffic.

I thought that the 1050 would get pretty good mileage, considering that my other bike is a big, thirsty 1400. But the Triumph has about 30% more horsepower, and that makes it thirsty. The 100 miles up the freeway (almost all of it in 6th gear, turning between 4000 and 5000 rpm) plus about 20 miles in traffic in San Francisco, was enough to get the low-fuel light to come on.

Out on the open road, I didn't notice any heat from the engine or the undertail exhaust. But once we hit the San Francisco traffic, my legs were really feeling the heat through my all-weather textile riding gear.

Anyhow, I've posted a few pictures of my new toy: http://picasaweb.google.com/gsx1400k3/SanFranciscoNewRide

Yeah, that heat can be annoying. I remember having the same experience when I test-rode my boss's FJR1300. But in the condition I was in, that can be a good thing

It was awesome meeting Jim again. The ride into SF was great. The first hour of the return trip was however a nightmare. As it was down-pouring all the way from San Francisco until about Livermore and I was soaked wet. Then it took about three hours of riding on the freeway to dry the pants and the jacket. I finally got home around 10 PM and then proceeded to play poker with my friends for another 3 hours.

Total distance traveled was about 835 miles. I left home ~7 AM and returned ~10 PM (~15 hours). Now my crotch is killing me. They really should rename this thing to Steelcrotch, not Ironbutt.

Here is a picture. In the background between Jim's neck and my head were the two bikes....

Now that's some good ol' fun. That's funny, Walnut Creek, CA is my home town. I was born in the hospital right over in Alamo. Wish I could join you guys.

I'm always amazed when I go back and see how much things have been built up. When I was a kid, there was nothing but Walnut trees and Arabian horse farms. If you listed Alamo on your mail by mistake, You'd still get it.

so inspiron, what is "the man" charging you to rent said bike?

Curious to know what bike rentals are on the west coast. Like it's going to be my next vacation spot.

I enjoyed watching people's reaction when people watched us riding in the rain....

It's the West Coast, how cold can it be?

What low mid 60's?

Although if I was in CA this time of year, I would be looking at driving at points south of LA rather than north to San Fran.

Sound like a good meeting (except for the rain). Fisherman's Wharf is where my friend Don and I ate dinner when we rode up from LA. Two days before we met up with Tom(Wookie).

Boudin's, is that were you ate? Good eatin'. That's what we had.

Wookie, hope the butt softens up for ya.

Well played sir!

However, what you fail to recognize is that Goofy Bucks, Minnie Bucks, and Mickey Bucks are legal tender in a certain microcosm on this planet.

However, the legal tender you plan on passing off......

Jim, Wookie, how nice that you actually rode together!!
And glad you got back safely inspite of the rain.

Yeah rain sucks not just because it's uncomfy and cold but also because it makes the road a lot more dangerous.

Nice pics too!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

(So Wookie, how's your butt doing? I'd die if I had to ride that distance!)
