road trip october 2007 set out at about noon on saturday. my first issue was that i found i couldn't gas up with some types of environmentally safer gas nozzles. took me three gas stations before i found one that would let me put gas in the shadow. i had used the idle screw to set the idle much lower than it had been. so there was quite a bit of backfiring. but once in gear and with a little throttle there was none, so i decided not to worry about it. riding up I-35 through fort worth was a %%%%%, but it could have been far worse. about 70 miles from home i stopped to gas up, put on my throat protection, and change into my gauntlet gloves. i also had a headache from the helmet by that time, but it wasn't too bad. my math skills suck, so i am only certain that the shadow was getting more than 40 miles to the gallon. not bad for such a big bike. doing the speed limit meant i didn't pass a single vehicle, but was passed by everyone else. %%%% em. the scenery was nice. rolling hills and such. the wind seemed to be from the north, so the ride up sucked a little more ass than it should have. after the next 80 miles i stopped again for fuel, to clean the bugs off my visor, and to rest my right hand. the return trip from norman was as uneventful as the trip up. except for dropping the bike on an incline. bent left peg and bruises. the shadow at a scenic outlook: http://i23.photobucket.com/albums/b3...7/DSC01482.jpg i made one fuel stop on the return trip and only had to put in 1.9 gallons after riding 111 miles. made it home ok, in spite of nasty i-35 traffic in fort worth. total miles: 422 bugs killed: thousands |
