Default Commute to work

Rode the Honda to work this morning. Left extra early, still hit traffic. It was stop and go most of the way here. Alot of very slow idling following cars in front with just enough distance to keep moving without having to put a foot down, but close enough that a cager wouldn't try to squeeze in front of me. If you give them a chance they will take it. Traffic is even worse by the time I leave here, will probably take side streets most of the way home.

Yeah riding to work on a bike in heavy traffic isn't really that much fun. On my ride home though, I take back roads ( can't take them on the way TO work, where those back roads join into the main roads = heavy traffic and end up waiting longer than just staying w/ traffic the whole way ) and enjoy my ride a bit more.

I have found a magic window...where if I wait till 7:30 to leave...I can fly to work unscathed by any sort of traffic.

It's really quite amazing. If I left 5 minutes sooner I'm in traffic, 5 minutes later...same thing.

Congratulations on riding to work.

I'm hardly surprised by the bumper-to-bumper thing -- after all you're in NYC, which despite the reputation has a lot of people who drive into Manhattan from Queens, Brooklyn and Staten Island.

<Alot of very slow idling following cars in front with just enough distance to keep moving…>

Know what ya mean (sorta). Commute roughly 170 miles a day, but thankfully if I time it right only about five miles of it has the potential to slow me to paddle-foot speeds… but there are days…

One thing about the DC area is that at least in rush-hour; it seems to be one of the more rider-aware metro areas… of course when it’s not rush-hour, the tourists and pass-through transients come out to play, and then all bets are off… Heavy 18-wheelers from Florida to Maine and Winnebago’s from Wabasha are a particularly noxious mix…

Oh NY has one of the worse traffic I've seen! Even Tokyo is not that bad. In the past, I made some mistakes taking a taxi and I ended up getting off and switching to subways. And riding in bad traffic is sure not fun.

Zenn, you may want to try slightly different time zones. You may find a magic window too.

Personally, I refuse to ride to work. For me, traffic is not what motorcycling is all about. If a person enjoys a ride to work that's cool, but I've been hit (in my truck) so many times (many of those shots would have killed a biker) that the magic is gone for me.

I choose to get killed by a moron on a back road on a Saturday, as opposed to a moron in traffic on the way to work.

I hear ya bro.

I use my bike for supreme gas mileage during the week and a toy on the weekends.

I leave real early to ride to work before traffic, then leave early to go home for the same reason. Of course I have that option w/ my job. I also have an alternate back road route I can take if I get stuck at work too late.

Would you believe I never made it out to Coney Island ever? That's what happens when you live on the Upper East Side

On the plus side, I did ride my bicycle through Central Park every day...

I took this pic of the Broadwalk late in the afternoon. It was really nice!

And you might recognize this building. There was a Shepard peeping out of the roof and somehow it's one of my favorite pics.

I'm not missing anything: I don't eat North American beef for a variety of reasons.

Traffic riding on a bike sucks.. I am not allowed to lane split and probably wouldn't even if it was legal because people suck and I've seen them open doors on bikers and even throw things as they ride past. The mind set of the human race is sad, mean, selfish, and all around evil for the most part. If they are stuck in traffic then they feel everyone around should be unhappy and stuck with them regardless if they can squeeze past you on a bike. I seen this so many times in and around Birmingham Al that I stopped riding my bike to work. I have even had a guy in a car come over the lane lines to block me from "ATTEMPTING" to go around which I wasn't even trying to. I was just sitting there but I guess he wanted me to know that passage was blocked.. So.. as traffic started to move I shot around him on the other side he left exposed..haha.. idiot... he wasn't happy at all..
