I would think the cost would vary depending upon the age of the motor, number of and availability of replacement parts needed, plus the amount of time the mechanic needs to tear it down and put it back together. Older motors were simpler (designed to be torn down and rebuilt), but it is getting harder to find parts for them. Newer engines are more complex, and require more technical knowledge (meaning the mechanic charges more per hour).
