Default Downshifting techniques

What is the preferred or proper method of down-shifting? Going from 6th to 1st; clutch lever in-click down to 5th release the clutch, repeat all the way trough. Or as I have been doing, clutch lever in, click trough all the gears, come to a stop.
This would be different if I wasn't coming to a stop, then clutch lever in, click down from 6th to 4th, slowly release clutch, at this time I'm also on the brakes slowing down and engine breaking is kicking in as I let the clutch out.
I'd like to hear your thoughts on this. Keep in mind I have very little experience with manual trans. I drove stick shift vehicles half a handful of time, and not well.
