Default Not Really Riding?

Today I saw a Goldwing with all the bells and whistles, I mean load brother. The one thing that really got me about this bike was the outriggers, two wheels on spars so that you never have to put your feet down. Now the question I have is, wouldn't a convertible been cheaper and is this really biking. I'm not trying to piss anybody off, I don't have a problem with windshields and radio's and such, but how much is to much.

I don't care if you ride a motorized beer keg, people can do as they wish. The question is can you reach the level of comfort and convenience that you've completely left the riding experience behind? I understand a person on a old ridged frame might look at someone on a RoadKing or a C90T and say " that's not really riding. " but at some point you almost ask yourself whats the point.

I've always said I'd buy a Miata long before a Goldwing. I just don't get it. That goes double for trikes.

For some, the knees go first, so outrigger or trikes is an option.

So don't worry about the choice others make. Do your own thing and respect the rights of others to do the same.

We aren't discussing the rights of others. We're discussing what we'd do and why. You don't need to project that onto others.

And Vin, it's not cool to call someone "a handicap". Don't define people by their disabilities.

IMHO a trike or a side car is still riding, even training wheels.

Again, I'm not worried about what others ride, I've said that already. What i'm getting at is, how much of the riding experience can you remove and it still be riding. Take away the wind, the feel of the road, the lean in the turns and everything that makes biking, biking and all you have left is a conveyance. If you want to be wind free, listen to the radio, visit with your passenger and have a heated seat, why not buy a convertible.

It's all subjective. Some people don't consider people with scooters as riders.

That's more of a status or machismo thing, though. You can really rail on some of those scooters.

I'm in complete agreement with L&S. You take away the lean, and any semblance of maneuverability, and you no longer have motorcycling. I'm speaking strictly from a standpoint of the experience, and not the outward appearance.

Yeah those things do get kind of crazy. I personally say buy a convertible at that price. I see what you are saying though. They do start to lose their motorcycle qualities with all of the luxuries.

Still subjective though. Lots of people argue that wearing gear takes away from the riding experience.

I can’t knock the Goldwings bells and whistles IV never been on one. It all depends what kind of riding experience the consumers looking for.

There's a Vietnam vet I ride PGR missions with. He rides a Goldwing trike. His handle is Pegleg. There could be a number of reasons a real biker might be on a trike or have those outriggers. I wouldn't tell Pegleg he isn't experiencing motorcycling.

And his GW trike is nothing like a Miata.

This thread does not apply to riders with physical conditions that do not allow them to ride a conventional bike.

some Goldwings have the outriggers that retract - so the only time they come down is coming to a stop for stability at low speed. They retract when you get moving again.
I think that if it's a case of riding with the outriggers vs. not riding at all, then bring on the training wheels!

Some would say that wearing so much protective gear that you can't feel the wind in your face and your T-shirt rippling in the wind isn't real riding. To each his own.

I had to go and find myself a damn video of this in action.

Easier than putting the bike on a centerstand, I suppose.

+1. That's about being part of a group, not "motorcycling" so much. Nothing wrong with that.
