| Only thing worse than reformed smokers are Milwaukee converts ![]() Seriously though... Every bike nameplate out there, past and present, has made their contribution In over 36 years of riding, I've seen the Jap bikes inovate and dominate the off-road sports, as well as transform the street scene. The middleweight Honda 4-stoke twins were bulletproof Brit bike killers. Yamaha, Suzuki, and Kawasaki 2-strokes were legendary performers that ruled the tracks. The CB750 broke the mold as the original superbike. The Kawi 900Z took that to a whole 'nother level. The cafe and sportbike revolution of the next decade brought a level of performance never dreamed of, and has improved every year to this day. V-four and inline cruisers made solid gains into the 90's, and the result of those efforts has brought us to the current generation of extraordinary Jap large-bore v-twin cruisers. And that, my friends, makes me one very happy old-fart motorcycle addict!

However, in my opinion every bike has it's pro's and con's. I'd be happy to list them all, but just don't have the time. (wanna go riding) |

| My point of view. 1) Honda introduced the inline 4 cylinder bike engine (more importantly the 4 synchronized carbs that went with it) 2) Honda introduced liquid cooling, shaft drive and electronic ignition on the original Goldwing. 3) Honda has tried so many goofy dead end ideas it's nuts (the Hondamatic? The CB900 with the two shifters and the right hand side drive shaft? The CBX 6 cylinder?) If Honda has gotten a bit stodgy, it's because they've done all that and a bag of chips and have since learned to focus "on their core competencies." What competencies are these? Well, racing, racing, and did I mention racing? One of the reason Honda isn't always cutting edge is because they favor reliable over "wow." Wow, works on show room floor; reliability brings the customer back. Honda learned a lesson the u.s. carmarkers still have trouble with; buy the cheap version and give your customer choices as they move up the food chain. Honda is sinking all kinds of money into scooters for nothing. They know a small amount of them will migrate to bikes. If you don't they'll have another scooter for you to trade in for. My biggest problem with Honda is that any Honda dealer tends to take the attitude of "We are doing you the customer a favor by selling you this world class motorcycle that's all that and a bag chips. Period." Makes the Triumph dealers almost look modest, something that takes some doing mind you. |
