PA. Same deal you gotta have the stuff in your hand....
Oh yeah, I forgot we have to have insurance and road tax before it goes anywhere. Riding or driving without Tax & Insurance is a criminal offense.

BTW what is MD?

In Japan you MUST undergo min. 37 hours of riding in schools before you can even try for the final test which you must pass to get a riding license.
And for each of the 37 hours, you need the instructors' OK to move on. So that means if a day of school teaches you to do a figure 8 and if you can't do it right, you have to repeat the same class untill you are able to do it and the instructor signs off.

So if effect, most people actually spend more that 40 hours before they can even go for the final test. Then if you fail the test, you have to spend one more class (2hours) riding and only then you can reapply for a second test. Some people end up taking this final test for something like ten times!!!

By the way, during the test, if any part of the bike even touched a pyron, you fail. We also had to ride on very bumpy roads and maneuver the bike standing, not sitting on the bike.

So by the time you pass the test, most people are pretty ok when it comes to basic riding. I still go to schools though because I want to be better at maneuvering at low speed and also better at riding in higher speed. In other words, safer riding and less risk.

But....the truth is.....it's also fun!!!

I forgot too. We also must have insurance and also pay tax. No bike/car is allowed with insurance.

looks like a lot of work to go ride/drive around japan.

are there a lot of accidents compared to other nations? i guess that would be hard to figure out... i don't even know how many we get in this city... heh.

The lady should have gotten a mini bike and spent a couple weeks falling off the thing before tearing up a brand new bike. The whole school thing is a great idea but a basic understanding of the dynamics of the machine would be even more valuable. Get in a position to surpass both your and the vehicles abilities without damaging either.

Go ahead and laugh. Instead of hand wringing and worried looks, a good dose of "Boy was that dumb!" and a belly laugh would work as well.

I think when I was younger I would have protested the way it's done over there. Now, seeing as many deaths from stupidity as I have, I don't think it's a bad idea.

Making it harder to get a license isn't the answer. Making it easier to really learn how to ride is. Can you say "mini bike". Off road is where it's at, as far as I'm concerned.

A solid understanding of "what will the bike do if I do this" is critical. Totally not covered in MSF classes. I was pretty shocked that they never really covered emergency braking on the test pad, just in the course work.

Once you can stop, going isn't as dangerous.

In my MSF class we covered emergency stops and swerving both in the classroom and out on the pavement.

That must have been a big classroom to do emergency stops and swerving in it!

We missed it. When? Just now. When will then be now? Soon.

I squeaked by, and just barely knew the fundamentals of riding.

The standards should be a lot higher here, if for no other reason than reduce the number of squids.
