Default $10,000 Speeding Ticket

Ontario's new speeding ticket.
50km/h+ costs you $10000

"Ontario, Canada Premier Dalton McGuinty today announced that being caught driving 50km/h (31 MPH) over the speed limit will automatically trigger "street racing" penalties -- even if the accused motorist is driving alone on an otherwise empty road."

Canada Introduces $10,000 Speeding Ticket

ouch.
i need to slow down...

i don't really know. the last time i got a ticket is was for 31km/hr over... (he dropped if from 49)

i think it was around $200 or something... nothing memorable.

maybe others in the province have other experiences.

it's a steeper fine than drinking and driving...
'racing' can get your driver's license suspended for up to 10 years
i don't think you even get 5 years for consecutive drinking and driving charges...

well here in Kentucky the cop can take your license for 25mph over no matter what your driving car, bike, truck or what ever, but I will admit the fine isnt quite that bad yet just $10 per mph Plus approx $100 court cost
some place charge $200 Court Cost

how long can the cops keep if for?
the 7 day suspension isn't the big one... it's the 10k fine and no license for 10 years (any vehicle)

That's nothing new over here. In some EU countries, a serious violation (anything 30 kmh over the posted limit is considered serious) can result in fines of up to 3 months salary. There was a top manager of Nokia in Finland who was fined something like $1 million for a traffic violation (not much if you are taking home $6 million or more per year).

There was just a report in the paper today about a recent court ruling here in Switzerland. A driver was stopped and ticketed for not having enough tread on his tires. The minimum requirement is 1.6mm of tread depth, and this driver had just 1mm of tread left. The fine was about $200 plus one month suspended license. The court upheld this decision - driving with too little tread is considered to be a middle-serious violation, and justifies a suspended license.

Default Speeding fines

Hell, SNEAK across the border into the U.S. of A. We have people coming across from the south and NOBODY does anything about it.

Yes, but what does that have to do with high traffic fines?

Our fines are not that costly so he could get away with SOME speeing down here. Sorry about the rest of the rant, I just got carried away. Should have saved that for a different site

Some places are not as serious about speeders.

I looked up the points in Nevada recently because I got a ticket there.

Fine was $200 but the points in Nevada are low.

12 points in 12 months will get you a suspended license.

1 to 10 MPH over is 1 point
11 to 20 MPH over is 2 points
21 to 30 MPH over is 3 Points
31 to 49 MPH over is 4 points
41 PH or over is 5 points.

The 20 MPH ticket i got in Nevada would be 2 points on my Nevada license, unfortunatly I live in Colorado and it is going to be 6 points on my license here. (Same points needed for suspension though, 12 in 12 months)

What a *great* way to assure that the number of fleeing speeders increases! Way to go Canadia.

Does Canadia have the death penalty? Just wondering because their attitude towards speeding is over the top. I figured that murderers must *really* have to pay for their crimes.

After having my boss's step-son get his truck totaled by an "undocumented worker" with no license, insurance, inspection, registration, etc., I really start to feel that heavy fines on speeders, drunk drivers, etc. have no effect in making the streets safer.

Still distracted drivers, folks too old to drive, and downright idiots. God forbid actually trying to improve safety on the road. Lets ban everything... for the children.

** Ranting over **

With that out of the way, some younger gal (younger than me that is) ran a light horribly bad, almost hit 3 cars, etc. The first time in my life there was actually an unmarked police car to witness it and went after her. I was downright surprised.

I have a fake $1 bill for a $1 discount at Tony Roma's.
Would that help?

You just reminded me. Wasn't there a 18 yr old girl or something that saw the Fast and the Furious and got all "inspired", raced her car on a highway and killed a prince from Fiji or something who was visiting the States?

wow, i didn't even know about that accident in that link. hmm, so basically being drunk (guy had double the limit, so his judgement was most certainly off) and making a left turn (the single most popular place for a fender-bender) are not a factor in this at all??? oh, and i like how the prosecutor says that the victim shouldn't be at fault. jesus h christ, what a crock of poo. yeah, let's not say "hey, wait a second, you were drunk you dumb fook" and instead let's blame someone else cuz it's easier (that's the Canadian way, incidentally).

yeah, i'm sure this 50-over thing is gonna be REAL popular on the 401 between montreal - ottawa - toronto where you'll get run over if you're doing anything less than 120 (limit is 100). quite normal to cruise along with the flow of traffic at 130-140, and passing trucks is done at 150-160 since those jerks love to race each other up the hills and slow EVERYTHING down. hey, if all the soccer moms in minivans and couples with their kids and family dog on the way to the cottage are equally branded as street-racers and get THEIR vehicle impounded and license suspended, then i'm ok with that law. somehow, i don't think it's gonna happen quite like that. i'm sure THOSE will get let go cuz they're obviously not street racers - even though they're driving faster than anyone else on that highway.

i'm sick of this country...
