LD riders swear by sheepskin, though it does get wet. I opted for wooden beads for that reason, and they did all right.

Bring enough clothing in layers to handle the worst expected weather. Rain ruins your ride only if you're not prepared for it. Pack what you think you'll need, then leave half of it behind. You don't need all that crap.

It really depends on whether you like the way your face looks or if you wouldn't mind a little plastic surgery after an accident. I don't think that I would feel comfortable without a full face helmet but there are tons of people that only wear skull caps so......

There's only one kind of helmet in the world, IMO. You can guess what it is. Either you're wearing one or you're not.

I bought the bag shown here from Aerostich. It's really just a rafting bag, but it's simple to use and very rugged.

I haven't done any iron butt rides, but I would be very cautious about using sheepskin or beads on my bike seat. For my day rides through the Black Forest, I wear bicycle shorts under my gear - they provide some padding and take care of perspiration, keeping the 'boys' dry and comfy. Putting beads or sheepskin on the seat could lead to me sliding around on the seat - when I'm cornering around the forest, I want my butt/thighs to have a good grip on the seat, especially when I'm hanging off around a hairpin ...

I wore three flat spots on my brand new tires on that trip... center, left edge, right edge. The tire seriously looks like a slightly rounded hexagon right now (Lolo Pass, baby!). I had no trouble with it being slippery. In fact, it probably enhanced my ability to shift weight.

I love that pic of Clint's bike. All I can think of when I see it, is Clint picking up a fare like some crazy cabbie.

< Indian cabbie accent >

" We have reached your destination sir,,,most kindly that will be $14.50. Now please get de fark off de bike and kindly watch the side case as you do...have a nice day! "
