Default US Rider in Europe...License Valid?

My wife and I were talking about trips for our 10th anniversary, and the idea of going to Europe came up. In the course of the conversation she proposed potentially renting a motorcyle and touring around a bit.

This got me thinking. First, is renting a bike something that is easy to do and second, is my license even valid in Europe? I know Europe has graduated licensing (a good idea in my mind, even if I couldn't ride my current bike), and I'm a new rider. Would the European laws allow a holder of a foreign motorcycle endorsement to ride an 800-1200 cc cruiser type touring bike?

I doubt we would do this (as I'm still a new rider and cringe at the idea of me getting on a strange bike and having my wife hop on behind me), but I figured someone on this board would know the answer.
