Default Another Rider Gone.

Just after midnight last night a motorcyclist was involved in an accident with a van. The rider is dead and the three young males from the Van fled the accident.

Happened on #10 Highway and 148th.

No word on wether the Van was stolen.

Be ALERT!!!

This 41 yo father had just bought the Harley the day he was killed.
The Van was reported stolen after the accident and no one has come forward.

Another rider is on life support, he was given a bike for graduation and on the first day of ownership,he was found, after midnight, in a ditch in Burnaby, speeding on a curve, hit a light standard and drinking is suspected.
He is 18 and today was to be his last day at high school.

The father killed is so very sad. Perfect example of no one accepting responsibility(the three men in the van ran,and still haven't turned themselves in)
This kid...man o man. There is so much wrong with this. Imagine what whoever gave him the bike must feel like right now. What was he thinking?!? Probably no training,no license, obviously NO sense, after dark his first time out,and drinking and speeding.
Man ,I thought I knew everything when I was 18(wow, was I wrong!),but I wasn't this brain dead.

The family of the 18 year old made the choice to take their son off life support and donate his Organs.

A tough time for them.

This is really sad.....
It must be hard for families.....

When I raced at Bonneville, there was a dad who was driving a really tiny car (vintage that I don't even know the name of). He was complaining that it won't even go 100miles/hr but told be that it used to belong to his 18 yr old son, who died in a car accident after drinking and driving.

Since then he has been taking that same car to the Bonneville track in memory of his son.

Reading this thread made me remember....

Seeing my fair share of accident victims (riders), I often wonder what their last thoughts were? In my occupation, it's not an easy task to cover up the open wounds on a person's face, more so if the entire facial structure suffered severe trauma. We can only do so much to make that person look 'almost' perfect.

Sincerest condolences to the families of these two tragedies.

I find myself wondering the same thing.

As I posted in another thread (In Memory of Gabi), a friend was killed last week. I wonder what killed her - was it the crash itself, or did she suffer a stroke or heart attack that caused her to go off the road? These are questions that will never be answered. Gabi was a good rider, dressed in full gear, riding a newer (2005) BMW 650GS. I just can't imagine how this can happen - one minute you're riding along a road, the next second is a blur, then ... nothing.

Well, as they taught us in our safety class, a split second of inattention is all it takes for riders such as us to lose control and crash. This can be anything from looking down onto the engine, adjusting your mirrors, or taking your eyes off the road for an instant.

I had several close calls myself while riding, all because I was either enjoying the scenery, or checking my petcock for leaks. I've since learned that if anything needs to be checked out, it's safer to just pull over, get off and then check things out. Inattention is not prejudicial, it'll get anyone at any time. Of course, riding with an attitude can also have an impact on your riding as well...

Ride safe out there y'all...

It's terrible to hear of these accidents and deaths. But at the same time, it serves as a reminder (especially to a new rider like me) how dangerous riding can be.

My uncle has crashed 3 or more times (over 35+ years), none of which were serious. All of which were his fault. Most people I know that crashed was their own fault. And everytime it was not paying attention or following too close to the car they hit.

The last crash my uncle had was because he was looking to the side when the car in front had to make an emergency stop to avoid hitting a propane tank that flew out of the bed of a truck. He turned around and locked up the wheels.... too little too late. Wrote the Shadow 1100 off and bought a Goldwing with every bell and whistle.... go figure!

My friend's cousin crashed his bike into the side of a car that was turning. He wasn't looking forward and saw her too late to stop. He ended up slamming into her driver's door and flew overtop into a ditch. His legs were messed up for a while and have pins in them now. I think he broke both wrists too. He said he wasn't getting another bike because he didn't want to widow his wife and kids.

My Dad's coworker (recently died of a heartattack) dumped his last bike taking a turn too fast. He hit some loose dirt and laid it down and it hit a pole (thankfully he didn't). Wrote the bike off and bought a bigger one. He admitted he was exhausted from the heat and knew better than to ride with his mind in a fog.

As for the drinking...... I've never driven drunk. I've driven a few times (car) with a slight buzz. Maybe I would've done the same on a bike at 18... dunno. I did some stupid stuff back then. It's probably a good thing I waited until my late 20's to get a bike. I'm much more responsible now than I was 10 years ago!

I know of one incident during my past Embalming career, where a female rider died while smoking her cigarette. Apparently as she opened her mouth to take another puff, the cigarette blew back into her mouth and down her throat, and when that happened, down she went and was killed.

I myself don't drink alcohol while riding, only when I'm home. I do smoke, but only when I'm stopped somewhere taking a break, never while riding...

Two things I have never done while riding, smoke or drink. If I think I might be drinking I dont take the bike, if I do take the bike I wont drink. Not worth the chance. Smoking just gives me an excuse to stop, get a drink and stretch the legs.
