Default Trade in my bike?

I bought my 1995 GSXR 750 (for $2k) a couple weeks ago and since then I've put nearly 1000 miles on it. I'm fairly confident on the bike and wear my riding gear each time I go out, no matter how how it is.

Being that it is a used bike, it has it's fair share of problems: Plugs keep fouling out, fairings need to be repaired, bike needs to be repainted, gets only 20mpg, have to wait forever for it to warm up in the mornings when I go to work/school.

I was planning on getting everything fixed on the bike (~$1,500 for new paint job and other small stuff) and selling it in the Spring of next year

I'm taking it to a shop on Thursday to get her looked at and tuned up properly. However I stopped at the stealership yesterday and looked at a brand new 2007 GSXR 750. They offered to accept my bike as a $2k trade-in, for payments of $99 a month.

What I like about the new bike is that it is fuel injected (not as long for warm-up), lighter, stronger, and more reliable (with warranty too!)

I got on the new bike and simply did not want to get off and it did not feel as I could ever drop it (being used to my 100lbs heavier 750.)

So now I'm thinking about trading in my '95 gixxer 750 for a '07 gixxer 600 (~10more hp and 100lbs lighter.)

Do ya'll have any comments on this? Or maybe some alternative bikes?

I use my bike for a daily driver, rain or shine. That and it is stored outside since I do not have a garage (under a carport if it is raining.)

They're offering you WHAT YOU PAID for the bike. I'd take it, unless you think you can get more for it in a private sale. $99/month? How many months? What's the interest rate? What's the total sale price after all payments are made? Can you afford it? What about insurance on the new bike?

Just some things to think about.

You have a bike that is paid for. You have limited seat time. The bike needs a good tune up, carb.s cleaned and sync'd. As 20 mpg is way down from where it should be, unless you are a squid.

I would start with the mechanics of the bike and work on riding skills and look at it again in a year. Your bike must need care if it is only worth 2m on trade.

$99 a month towards upgrading your present ride makes more sense.

The choice is yours!

Good luck.

Wait... your comment is giving me mixed signals...?

I have no clue how much it will take to sync the carbs and adjust the jets. The left fairing is cracked and needs to be repainted, the right one is scratched up. Tank has some scratches, so do the tail sections. The yoshimura exhausts had a little leak at the end, front fairing is also scratched. So I would say it is pretty damaged.

I believe the total sales price after all payments are made (including trade-in) would be about 11k for a new 07' gixxer 750, that's 99 a month for the next five years.

P.s. Well, never mind. I just called my insurance company. They want 3k a year for full coverage on a new bike. I'm paying 409 right now for minimum on a bike I own. Yea...

$99 a month for 5 years is 60@$99= $5,940 plus $2,000 trade in plus interest
leaves a balance of $5 to $6,000.

When my son was wiped out on his 91 GSX-R 750, we purchased aftermarket
white plastic and my youngest son painted it.

Buying a service manual for your bike is a good investment, if you and your friends can handle the work.
A shop will charge a couple hours labor to clean your carbs, less than $100 to
synic.
Check with Nut as he is the one with knowledge on the GSX-R.
My Son accepted $2,900 plus the bike, when the bike was finished, he had enough left for a Helmet, 2 piece leathers ($1,700)

Here is a picture of my son's bike after.

Sounds like a little work and time, and your bike would be a great ride. To fix the 20MPG problem, would most likely mean the carbs need to be gone through and get setup right. Also check your air filter and make sure it is not plugged up as this can cause on over rich condition. Most of this stuff you can do with an owners manual. If you do not feel comforatble doing the carbs you can pull them and send them to me and I will take care of going through them for you.

But as to trading, that is a decision only you can make.

Thanks for the advice everyone. I will wait until after my bike gets serviced and see how it goes from there.

As for painting your own plastic.... with spray cans? I never could get the clear coat correctly with cans... That and plastic for 93-95 gixxers are hard to find cheaply, I'll hit up Nut.

I talked to the dealership today and apparently they said to call one of their state farm agents to cut me a deal on full coverage for the bike.

If they can get me on a new 600 or 750 for $170 a month (including the insurance) with my trade-in I'll do it for sure!

My son's bike was done with a spray gun.
It was a borrowed rig but they can be rented.

Really look at the costs.
Being in debt for a bike for a long period of time is not the best answer.

It is your money.

Good luck.

I would do it if you are comfortable on your 750, but I would go with the 600 for insurance purposes. a brand new gsxr 600 will probably smoke your 95 (no offense against your bike but the new ones are just really powerful) so i dont think you would at all be disappointed in the power of the 600....take one out for a test ride and see if it is worth the monthly payment to you...

I'm not sure if they will let me take it for a test ride!

And yes, I know it would smoke my 750 being that is has 10 more hp and 100lbs lighter.

I'm very comfortable with my 750 with the exception of trying to do the duck walk on crappy pavement when I lose my footing on some pothole I missed but thought I was avoiding.

I just got off the phone with the State Farm rep...

Right now I'm paying $125 for car, bike, and renters insurance, minimum coverage on both vehicles with Progressive.

State Farm can give me $170 for all three, with full coverage on the bike. I'm very much leaning toward getting the new bike... as soon as I get info on financing.

Correction, right, State Farm can get me full coverage on the brand new bike for $25 more a month....

Too bad I only have 5k worth of credit, I got the dude to value my traded for EVERYTHING I've put into the bike... which is about 2250. That still leaves me a grand short (but I can come up with that easy.)

But the thing is... the APR on the 5k is 12.99%... That's 2k worth of interest if I do minimum payments...

Also, I'm not sure if it is an omen, but pulling out of the dealership parking lot while trying to do an uphill tight turn manuever I almost dropped my bike... luckily I planted my foot securely and was able to wrestle her back upright. Guys from the dealership were in plain sight too.

Very embarrassed to have nearly dropped my bike in public. I rode my friend's Honda CBR today... prefer my GSXR's seat and gas tank... fits me better... but man... his clutch and engine response was a dream... and fuel injection was so nice... just started right up and ready to rumble...

Just an update, I got my bike back from the shop today... she drives like a dream! A lot quieter and smoother now!

Preliminary estimate on a paint job is about $700 for candy yellow... And I also need to get the seats reupholstered.... hmmm...

Bah... just got back from my extended post tune-up drive...

Now instead of 18mpg I'm getting 24... but I have been a little throttle heavy... it would be so nice to hit 40s...
