Default Trip Report(PICS)!: Springfield to Camdenton

Mission: Springfield, MO to Camdenton, MO + Me + Vicki the VStar

I found out about 2 weeks ago that my good friends bachelor party was going down this weekend at Lake of the Ozarks, a perfect opportunity for me to take my first weekend trip on my VStar! At first I wanted to do it just to see if I could handle the entire weekend on 2 wheels, whereas all my riding so far has been work commute with some short (under 100 miles) trips sprinkled in there on weekends and evenings! But the more I thought about why I got into motorcycling I was quickly reminded about my best friends Dad - Jim. He really got me excited about motorcycling and while I don't know if he ever got the chance to make this particular ride, he talked for years about wanting to tackle the roads in and around Lebanon, MO on his bike! Unfortunately Jim past away from a brain tumor late last year after a long wonderful life and 30 years service in the air force reserves...

As the time until my weekend trip got closer I began google mapping my trip and realized there were some really great routes available to me! Springfield, MO is the starting point for the original Route 66, how can there not be some great roads near this town!?!

I found myself almost giddy Friday morning packing up and loading my ski boot bag on my bike along with another pack! (This trip has motivated me to buy some real motorcycle luggage!)...

5pm finally came and I was still excited to get on the road! I headed North out of Springfield on highway 65, which in Springfield is a major throurofare but once North of town this road goes to 2 lane with nice scenery. Not much went on here. Lots of people anxious to get home and start thier weekends. Buffalo, MO came quick. I thought I'd stop and adjust my bags as I felt they were a bit uncomfortable for me to lean against. Some nice gentleman with no teeth and the biggest bag of McDonalds food I've ever seen stopped to talk and find out "what ya gotta do to ride one of them legal?"!

My next stop was about 15 miles outside of Buffalo in Long Lane, Mo!

The liquids I took in had to come out! So I found a neat little (and I do mean little) town called Long Lane! Apparently as I came to find out Long Lane, MO is home to "Missouri's Smallest Bank" so I took the liberty of checking it out and taking a pee break near thier old fire truck! This was the first time this weekend I got a big smile on my face contemplating my situation of being on the road all by myself exploring! Now I was even more excited to see what was ahead! Weather check - it was a perfect mid 70's with lots of sun! No wind, GRAVY!

After a nice stop in Long Lane I was off to Bennett Springs! I hadn't been to Bennett Springs for several years and all I could think about was how nice the roads were around Lebanon! The VStar was humming along and I couldn't have been happier with her performance to date! Easy to ride, quiet, smooth!

I knew I was headed in the right direction!

The 9 mile trek from highway 32 to Bennett Springs was an amazing road! Twisty, green trees, heck it even smelled good! I saw 5 deer (sorry no pics) and a Bald Eagle!

After Bennett Springs I was headed to Lebanon, MO on a mission to find the Munger Moss Motel! I had been to the "Mungie" several years earlier with my best friend after hearing stories of him and his Dad crashing at the Munger for thier Canoe and Fishing trips! But first I needed some cash for the bachelor party! Enter Bank Of America! Thier ATM ate my fricking card! After 45 minutes of phone time with a bank of America Associate I finally got my card deactivated in case this ATM decided to spit out my card sometime soon!

Not letting the ATM incident get me down I was off to find the Munger Moss on old Route 66! After some searching and some help from this rather small sign I found it!

A Big thanks to the nice genteleman that "also rode" and stopped at the Bank to make sure I wasn't broken down as well as the Subway Manager in Lebanon who comp'ed my sandwich and drink because he felt bad his town's bank ate my check card!

After dinner in Lebanon I had to make tracks to Camdenton because it was getting dark and didn't want to have to hunt down my friends lake house in the dark!

All in all I was overly impressed with the VStar and how well it did! It seems to be real happy cruising twisties at around 55mph and equally well at 70+ when it needs to be. I think its time I purchase a windshield as well as some real motorcycle luggage as I think these types of trips are going to become more frequent if time permits!
