Spam-o-rama and ideas on how to curb it

ok, i assume everyone here has seen the endless 1-post 'members' with their auto-spam messages. seems signing up for accounts is easy enough that spam-bots are able to register and flood this forum with CRAP. well, more crap than i am personally contributing, which in anyone's books ends up being too much crap.

is this getting out of hand to the point that sign-ups need to be tightened? or new security measures put in? ideas on said measures? my first thought would be to ask the new user to recognize a colour and write what it is or pick from a list by code, because maybe the swirly numbers schemes are already hacked.

On another forum I belong to, (BurgmanUSA Forum and Website) the sign up was changed about 2 months ago, it just asks one very simple additional question.

This has eliminated 99% of the spam.
We used to get 15-20 bogus members per week. Requiring additional moderators to filter the crap. Since this was started about 2 months ago, we had only one slip through. It makes my job as one of the moderators (Jim), "quite boring", but very nice.
