Default Got a problem with the new to us bike !!!

We picked up a 94 Katana last month. It ran, poorly, when we got it. We changed the carb kits from stock to a stage 3 dino jet & the air filters to K & N Cones. The bike will not run on its own. It will start but you have to hold the throttle full open. We change the plugs, oil & filter. Still no change. We changed the carb kits down to a stage 1 with the regular K & N air filter. She still wont run the carbs are good they run my other Kat just fine. My next plan is to first change the plugs agin cause the others are badly fauled now, and try the carbs off my other katana to see if it will run. Any suggestions. We have had it running enough to go for a 1km rip & it had LOTS off power. Im sure the engine is fine?? Were running out of ideas someone PLEASE HELP !

Stock pipe?

Just a guess . . . you mention fouled plugs, which (to me, at least) indicates a rich mixture. Any chance the stage X kit is feeding too much gas, and the stock pipe won't allow enough air into the cylinders? Forgive me, I'm a tard.

It has a Vance & Hines exhaust with 4 into 1 headers. The carbs have been cleaned 3 times in the last week. The carbs work on my 89 Katana just fine ??????????? The plugs are fauled from trying to start it & playing around with the settings.

I'm not too handy with these things, sorry.

I'll tell you who you need to talk to . . . Blade. A Katana's basically a Bandit and Blade knows Bandits.

Shoot him a PM and keep your eyes on this thread. I'm sure someone that acutally knows what they're talking about (as opposed to a guesser, like me ) will be along with a good solution.

Ok I just checked the manual, there is not timing adjustment listed. I was just told be a repair shop that there is no timing adjustment to be done. Can anyone tell me different & get me the info to adjust it.

If the carbs run on adifferent bike just fine, I'd start digging into the ignition. The air cleaner and pipes won't make a difference if there is no or low spark. The fouled plugs could be from a weak spark. If it ain't sparking good and strong even the correct mixture would show black on the plugs.

Check and make sure a mouse hasn't built a nest in your exhaust...........Don't ask me how I might think of this.

OK.
Mechanics 101. Car, Bike, Go Kart. Won't run?
Fuel, Air, Spark. All these have to be right.
We know these have all been done. So it's time to move to the next steps.
Compression. Have you ran a compression test on the cylinders?
You'll need to do wet and dry compression tests to get the info you need. Numbers hit dry? Your good to go. Numbers low? retest with 3 or 4 shots of oil in the cylinder. Numbers come up? Bad rings. Numbers don't change? Bad valves.
Until you get that information. Your stuck.

There is no mouse nest, we checked that. It was stored in a house all winter. And we stored it in the house also when we got it.

Well, if the service manual (it's the service manual you have right?) doesn't have any info on timing adjustment then I'd tend to think there no timing to be adjusted.
