Default Lane Splitting in Washington

A co-worker told me that the Washington State legislature is considering legalizing lane splitting. Anybody heard about this?

No, but it could mean the beginning of something good.

No, but it sure would be nice if it trickled down to the rest of the country. Im also in favor of using peoples lawns and public sidewalks.

Yeah, that would be nice. I hate cleaning the dried grass and chewing gum off the swing arm and tail though.

I wish the rest of the country would catch up to us on this. Let me tell you from experience, that I don't feel in any more danger lane splitting than I do in stop and go traffic. I actually feel safer in between cars at slow speeds than I do at the inattentive driver pissed off that traffic is backed up.

I have yet to encounter (knock on wood) any driver closing the gap between lanes, or trying to open a door, or otherwise attempting to block my path.

That said, however, the one big concern I have with other drivers, is that some jerk on a bike with loud exhaust (you know what I mean, Harley with no mufflers or a chopper with the same) feels the need to rev his bike up, while doing this. One of those, or perhaps hundreds of these guys, with the "Loud pipes save lives" attitude are gonna ruin it for everyone else. My bike has aftermarket exhaust it its pretty loud and throaty as it is stock. I don't dare to go between cars or trucks in a low gear, I usually do it in second at a minimum, so as not to annoy or scare anyone next to me. Not everyone is gonna be courteous about it, that's human nature for ya, but I hope it gets passed in WA and all other states that may be considering this type of bill.

In NJ Assembly woman Alison Littell McHose is trying to pass a bill that would legalize lane splitting in NJ. The bill she's trying to pass is Assembly Bill 3701.

The AMA has a link which allows you to write to your local Chamber Representative in NJ to vote for this bill when the bill comes before the General Assembly.

If your from NJ use this link American Motorcyclist Association - Action Alert 01/15/2007
Legislation to Establish Lane Splitting Task Force to write to your local Chamber Representative.

You mean we're supposed to stay off the sidewalks. Guess that explains all the strange looks I get.

I tucked my bike in an out-of-the-way spot on the sidewalk while I made a quick dash in the store. When I came out, my bike was surrounded by three security guys. That was probably the most exciting thing they had all day.

I had some employee at Home Depot try to give me crap for parking in front of the store where all the rental equipment is, mind you a Harley was already they’re and they had a couple spots on the end.

You can’t parked that there
Why not this person did
Well I didn’t see them at the time
Well I guess you didn’t see me either

And walked right into the store, what a pus.
