I had a freaky experience on the way home tonight. I was going a bit faster than I should have been and I had to brake quickly because I got too close to the car in front when it started to brake for a red light. I locked both the front and the back brakes at the same time and bike felt like it was sliding on a greased road. The rear end swung out a bit and I let off both brakes. That brought the rear wheel back in line and I applied the brakes again. And, again both wheels locked up. This time I tried to modulate the brakes but I just kept sliding until I was up along side the car in front. Eventually I found some grip and stopped. The whole lack of grip really caught me by surprise. I'm not sure if it was caused by cold tires, braking too hard or crap on the road. Speed is an obvious component but I've braked like that before and never had anything remotely like this happen. In the end nothing bad happened. Frankly I wasn't even all that put off by the experience. However as I rode away, I was wondering if my instinctive reactions had been the right thing to do? When I felt the rear slide out should I have let off the brake? I seem to recall that is a recipe for a high side. I wish it wasn't going to rain all weekend. I'd like to go back in the daylight and see if I can see my skid marks. |
