Default Another example WHY to wear your gear

It's not like we need another reminder, but ... WEAR YOUR GEAR!

I just read a post from a guy in the Swiss motorcycle forum where he described the end of his Honda Repsol. He had a big lunch, and thinks that he blacked out due to low blood sugar. He was leaning into a right turn on the Furka pass (one of the highest passes in Switzerland) and passed out. Looking at the marks, he must have fallen to the right, twisting open the throttle and causing the rear tire to spin out. The last thing he remembers is thinking "this is bad" as the rear tire caught again, bucking him off in a textbook high-sider.

He is bruised and battered, but has NO broken bones or road rash. He was wearing full leathers with protectors, and there is some serious damage to the leathers. He was in the hospital for 2 days for observation, but is now back at home.

Attached - a picture of his helmet. This obviously saved his life...

Yep...I'd say that was as good an example as any.

Gear is a necessity....not a fashion statement.

He should have been wearing a tinfoil hat under the helmet, that would have kept them from making him black out.

I've never heard of lunch causing low blood sugar.

Rowdy you took the words right out of my mouth. The only other explanation I can offer is that he had a possible seizure. Fainting on a motorcycle would be rare indeed, but now I'm getting off the initial topic.

Since Jolene was pregnant with our first she's had gestational diabetes. I've learned more than I ever wanted to about that business. She's on insulin this time.

well think this way, a big lunch, your body diverts blood from elsewhere to the stomach to digest the food. its why you sometimes get sleepy after a big meal. This i guess is just taken to another level with the vehicle dynamics possibly forcing more blood further fromhis noggin & consequently enough of a blackout to cause the accident.

This is my guess of what happened at least.

Plus the fact that the Furka pass heads pretty quickly up to almost 8000 feet above sea level, so in addition to not enough blood there was the addition of not enough oxygen. On top of that, he was a relatively new rider (only about 1 year of experience), so he may have over-estimated his abilities (or not listened to his body).

I guess that all makes sense. Just rare.
