Default RE: Keeping your mouth shut

I watched a rider leave the bar I work at tonight on a cruiser in very light clothing, as well as his passenger. I thought about running up to them before they blasted off, letting the girl know that her sandals were resting on the pipes and not the pegs... but I've seen that couple in here a lot and they usually leave half-loaded... much like many of the regulars who ride bikes to the bar.

I'm faced with this moral dilemma of speaking my mind about drinking & riding, from the young sport bike riders to the old veteran Harley riders who have been riding longer than I've been alive.

But I keep my mouth shut, beyond asking them if they're okay to be on two wheels. I just worry that one day one of them are going to stop showing up.

In Australia we have something called "responsible service of alcohol", basically it a set of principles that clubs are legally required to abide by. a quick summary herefrom one club. Read the section on drink driving.

Personally I'd tell them. You know how crazy the States are...if they crash and survive, they could sue you for negligence. Same thing if they die, their families could sue you.

Sucks but its true

+1

Furthermore, the knowledge that you tried to help these riders avoid foolish situations may give you some peace of mind if something were ever to happen to them...It would be better for you to sit around wondering "why didn't they just listen to me" rather than "why didn't I say something".

I'd go one further: I'd notify the cops. They're a threat to others, too, and my principles don't allow me to look the other way.

I'm quite lax for a number of reasons on the "War on Drugs" (alcohol being a drug) waged by about every administration since Reagan; however, I am NOT lax on drinking and driving laws. Driving is a privelege, not a right.

Furthermore, ever since I have started riding, I cannot refrain from shaking my head and inquiring to myself the intelligence levels of individuals that ride both sport bikes and cruisers that wear half-helmets, sandals, shorts, cut-off shirts, T-shirts, or any other ridiculously unsafe form of clothing when on a bike.

A bar tender that calls the cops on people who drink. That's actually kinda funny.

kinda funny but also responsible. I'd sooo rather be hassled by a barman to get a cab than to go attempt to drive, get nabbed for dui, a friend of mine just got his license back after the maximum ban they can give, three years, for high range pca (percentage concentration of alcohol), i.e. he was pissed off his tree when they got him.

Since when is a DOT certified half helmet considered unsafe clothing?

Agreed. They're suitable for bicycles and that's about it.

While we all know that half helmets aren't as safe as a full helmet, when it is your time to go, it is your time to go. I ride with a half helmet because it is my personal preference. I also ride all the time with gloves, boots, atleast a long sleeved mesh shirt at a minimum, and jeans as a minimum. Does that make me a unsafe rider? I'm the one who has to live with it if I get in a wreck. Not anyone on this forum who thinks that they are better then everyone else who doesn't ware a full face helmet.

Good Lord, talk about defeatism.

I don't have a great deal to say about when my time to go is, but I'll damn sure still have a face when I do go.

I guess my perspective comes from the crash I had in May of 1994. I'd be scarred badly right now if not for my whole helmet.

Personally, and i know that no one cares about that, I know I should wear a full-face on every ride.

In reality, I dont wear a helmet most of the time. I know its stupid, but I've been having some problems with my helmet being comfortable enough lately. Its a lame excuse, but I think its cutting off circulation to my brains cause i get dizzy every time i wear it. I'll try to break it in a bit more over the winter.

I'd say that is "Fatalism". It's always a popular philosophy during war and other conversations about death.

There are a myriad of counter-arguments for the "when your number is pulled" line of thought, but I'm way too lazy to illustrate them now. However, what if "your time", really means, "the time you created via your decisions"?
