Default Do I call, or don't call?

Here is the deal. I have a new squid in the neighborhood. I've seen him for the last 3 days on the street in front my house. The first and second day he comes around the corner really slow, not looking too confident, and accelerates to about 35 or 40. then slows down and does a rolling stop at the stop sign. Yesterday, I'm taking out the trash and he comes up the street and pulls a wheely. This is a youngster on a sport bike with paper plates trying it out in the neighborhood. It is ovious that he doesn't have any riding experience and thinks he is the man. If he cracks his skull open doing the stupid, that's on him and I will volunteer my press washer to the crew that comes to pick him up.

What I'm worried about the most are the kids playing in the neighborhood. If one runs out in front of him or he looses control of the bike doing the stupid and kills one of them. So, do I call the sherriff's office and put an end to his irresponsible behavior or do I let nature takes it's course and let him learn the hard way, the asphalt way?

Call.

You have a right to voice your concerns... it is your neighborhood too. Riding up and down a populated residental street is NO place to be learning to ride, and doing stupid stunts. If he wants to do that, he needs to find somewhere else that he can only hurt himself.

Its people that act stupid on bikes are the ones that give a bad reputation to all bike riders. Do us all a favor and make that call.

To make the story short one lost control bike flipped missed an 8 year old boy and hit his 16 year old sister and her freind both ended up with major injuries the rider walked away.

So yeah I agree call!!!

Mitch, I'd agree you should call on that one. Neighborhoods should be safe for kids to play in, someone need to get it into the squid's head.

Ideally, trying to talk to him and assist in his education would be best. But I'm sure there aren't too many squids on replica sport bikes who will listen and learn from a cruiser. Maybe if you have a caring and responsible friend who is on a similar style bike, they might have more of an impact. Maybe an MSF course instructor, or someone from a bike repair shop.
I don't know how much success you will get from law enforcement. He is obviously a threat and breaking many laws, but probably is pretty low on their list of priorities. It may help if you are able to establish a consistent time he is arriving home, running the stop signs, practicing his squid maneuvers. That way, they can try to swing by around then and catch him in action.
Either way, I would encourage attempting to intervene. If it was my child, I would want someone with more knowledge trying to help. But good luck, I'm not sure you will have much success.

+1. I'd try and resolve the issue with him personally first. Maybe you can steer him the right way.

I would also talk to him first, give him a chance to smarten up, offer to ride with him and show him the ropes. If he's still acting like an Id10t then call johnny law and make the complaint.

Okay, I see you all agree to report it. I called the sherriff's office and let a message in the "Traffic Complaint" mail box and my call was returned within 15 minutes. They are going to notify the patrolmen who patrol the area to keep an eye out for him.

Most of you had not heard about this but I'm sure Paul has. About 3 or 4 weeks ago a deputy here saw two guys on sport bikes ride wheelys through an intersection. When he turned around to persue them, they fled. He quit chasing them because of their speed and he preceeded in the same direction and came across one of the bikes on the ground and a wrecked car. One of them hit a turning car. He was dead, and his buddy didn't even stop. It turned out both were G.I.'s from Ft. Carson and they found and arrested the other guy. With that fresh in their minds, I have no doubt they will take my call seriously.

I was thinking about talking to him about his speeding. The problem is everytime he has passed by, he is going to fast to flag him down. And I also figured, who is going to make more of an impression, the guy up the street with the cruser, or the Sherriff's Office? I really doubt he has his "M".

My offering to ride with someone like that is out of the question. I will not put myself in danger by riding anywhere close to anyone that displays that much irresponsibile behavior.

You did the right thing going to the Police first.

Nobody likes being told or asked to reign in their behavior anymore by someone who is not in a position of authority. You never know how that conversation will turn out. It could become a confrontation. Keep a log of what he does, and continually report him if he keeps it up. Eventually, something will be done.

Throw a 2x4 (ask Sunny if you don't have any on hand) into his front wheel while he wheelies!

There's something to be said for giving the guy a chance. Yesterday I drove past a city park and a guy was shooting his compound hunting bow at a target. I rolled up and told him he might want to check the laws because I think that's illegal (actually, I know it is). He thanked me and moved on.

The kid might not know that wheelies are illegal, and what teenager puts the safety of the community above his fun?

I understand what you are saying about giving someone a chance, but if this guy don't have enough sense to realize the danger he imposes on other, he needs to get a good lesson. I was 18 when I got my first bike. I didn't go speeding through residental streets. I would assume this guy has a drivers licence. If he has gotten that far in life, he knows that streets have a speed limit and he should obay the lay. The excuse of being a teenager doesn't stand any ground when someone is hurt or killed.

If he want's soak his oats, there is south end of Powers Blvd. 1/2 mile away that is wild open with no houses or anything around. It's a great place if you want to open it up. But there is no one there either to show off too.

I do understand what you are saying about giving someone a chance. I think there are situtations like the guy shooting his bow who simply didn't know he was not suppose to shoot there. I would bet he know he couldn't sight in his 30'06 there. I think this guy knows what he is doing is wrong and dangerous. If he doesn't know that, then he don't belong on the road anyway and is a matter for the police.

There you go Cajun, just refer the squid to Natalya! She can keep him busy enough as a pen pal to keep him off the streets.

Blazn, she may be impressed by his newly developed skills. And someone for him to show off to. I'll make sure he gets her info.

As a mother myself, I say do something. Either call or approach him and offer to give him lessons in a more unpopulated lot area.
