Default I think we have covered this full circle.

I appreciate everyone's opinion and I think we covered this full circle. I'll give a report when there is more to report.

I would like to respond to the comment from Scott on the previous page about learning to stunt (where it is safe to do so) so that you can learn the limits of your bike.

I agree with part of the statement, but not the way it was presented.

I agree that everyone should learn what a motorcycle is capable of. The video in another thread (the two Harley riders that overtake a motorhome and then fail to make the next turn) shows what can happen when you don't know how to lean the bike. Most people never get near the limits of what a bike could do. Every rider should know what his or her bike is capable of (and this is usually MUCH more than the rider is willing to 'risk').

On the other hand, learning to do stunts is not something you should do by yourself or with some "buddies". If you want to learn how to stunt, this should be done in a controlled enviroment with a professional trainer. And proper gear and specially prepared bikes, usually starting with 125ccm enduros. Stunting with a street bike is stupid. Learning to stunt means that you WILL drop the bike, and dropping a street bike is expensive - even a minor drop can cost several hundred dollars to repair. Most kids won't admit that the damage to the bike was their fault (= stupidity) - they will try to get their insurance to pay for the repairs. And where does the insurance company get this money? From everyone who is insured there - including you and me.

+1

I am wondering why the boy stopped, even before the original post. Perhaps someone else had already taken action, either already called authorities, approached him, or even the kid's parents. Either way, something was done.

Aloha,

Ever wonder how the "professional trainer" learned? I come from a different "era". There were no MSF classes. I don't even think they had DOT helmets back then. Msf instructors learned the same way I did, so too did "stunt" riders. I'm not exactly sure where all these "instructors" came from if they didn't teach themselves to begin with. It's a different society today and it seems everyone has to gain approval from everyone else and a set process has to be established before we can define it as politically correct. Not sure what I think about all this (well actually i do), but I guess that's the difference when you started riding when bikers were still considered outlaws. The one thing I guess i'm taking away from this thread is the undeniable fact that today I can consider myself a dinosaur.

I'm rarely aggravated that someone diagrees with me. What aggravates me is when people twist the issue or bring blatantly false assumptions into it. That's all.

These days it's more important to get your point across. Doesn't matter if it's false or not. People have the right to imagine they are correct.

Scott, I recently saw a bumper sticker that applies here.

"I remember when sex was safe and scuba diving was dangerous!"

Just because professional training wasn't available back then, doesn't mean it is wrong or bad. It means that there is a safer way to learn these things today than there was back in the '70s.

Back in those days, there were no cars with ABS, ESP, airbags and other common safety features. There were even models on the road without seatbelts and with plain (not safety) glass windshields. Motorcycles were unreliable, dangerous, had weak brakes and crappy suspensions. Safety gear was a fiberglass helmet and a leather jacket. Yup, those were the days.

But today, there ARE professionals available to teach you good habits. Our vehicles are much safer and more reliable (both cars and bikes). Our safety gear is worlds better than it was back then. But at the same time, there are many, many more cars on the road that there was back 30 years ago.

I agree in principle. Those of you who want to take courses and do all those things I'm glad they are available, but not to the point that it is inclusive. People shouldn't ever be denied the chance to learn something on there own. I've read on other forums where people complain that MSF classes are booked solid and other posters actually tell them they should park the bike until they can get in. To me that is just unbelieveable, but again I come from a different time. I often wonder how many would ride if we still had the bikes I started out on. Compression release and kick start. How many would say this isn't for me the first time they got thrown over the handle bars by the kick lever. How many would still have the drive to master 2 wheels for the shear pleasure (and freedom) of it if we hadn't made life so easy for everyone? As much as we have gained I think we lost something too.

I wasn't arguing. I was stating my opinion. I am right. I am always right.

What get's me is when it seems that what people state thier opinion as if its fact... and it's not, it's an opinion.

In this thread we were giving suggestions to a fellow member as to what we would do if we were in that situation and why... that does not mean that IS what he should do.

Your right tech, and this might be one of the few things I've agreed with you about in this thread. We are simply giving suggestions of what we think a fellow rider should do, what we would like to see happen and how we would all reach a common goal. But just like your opinions on this topic, you and I and the rest of us also have our opinions on what is being said.

Heres the joy of text...no emotion, no inflection in what is said...simple words, nothing more. Is somebody asking a question? Stating what, in their opinion, is fact? Or simply spouting off. Maybe that statement was innocent enough, or maybe it was exactly as it sounded...We'll never know.

Oh by the way...this, I believe, was your quote

"The best approach" is not determined by how the person will react better to... or wether or not to get involved... "the best" SOLUTION is one that protects the innocent.

There is a such thing as basic human common sense and a respect for the lives of others. This person obviously has neither.

Stop trying to debate "how to get across to the kid"... Protect the innocent.
You're opinion right? Actaully we all feel the same way, and we've stated it in countless ways in this thread.

and this
Or would you rather someone get hurt first, then call the police?
How'd you spin this one? Where'd you find this little nugget?

Let's kill this thread with a simple, do what we think needs to be done. Do as much as your comfortable with, and do this in order to protect the rest of us.

Now who want's a peice of pie, I'm done with this
