Default Ducati??????

I love our Suzuki...but I have the opportunity to puchase a 1991 Ducati 900ss Supersport. It has 24,000 miles, performance extras, and has had only 2 owners. My brother-in-law is the second owner and he knew the owner before he purchased it. They both have taken very good care of it. He wants to sell it to me for $2500.

Is this an okay price? Are Ducati's reliable bikes? Also being a new rider, is this a good step up from a GS500F?

For those that aren't familiar...It has approx. 95- 100 hp. (not sure...thats what my B-I-L said). I was considering a Kawasaki ZZR 600 and think this maybe a better choice for now.

Thanks for any input!

I would say get the Kawasaki ZZR 600, does the ducati even have fuel injection? If I were you I would say no deal 2500 is to much to pay for another used bike since you already have one. Save the 2500 for gear or a down payment on the kawasaki. Just my opinion but its really a matter of perference and your current abilitys. Both bikes have higher HP/TQ but one would be new and the other old. Its to many factors to consider when talking about a 91 motorcycle, maybe if I knew more than I could help you a little better.

$2500 for a Ducati seems like a good price. However, as far as a good upgrade not sure as it is a powerful bike. If the GS500F is your first since it's a '06 then I'd suggest you keep the GS a few more months to increase your experience and skills.

My 2 cents,

I agree with Louis stick with the GS500 a little longer(the rest of the current riding season) than purchase that Kawasaki, because I just took a look at a 1991 Ducati 990ss and its super ugly. Since you live so close to me, our riding seasons usually give us at least until late october before we have to retire the beast(motorcycle). Stick with the GS than next season begin with it than get the Kawasaki, but under no circumstance get that Ducati unless you are going to start a motorcycle museum.

My 2 cents,
Thanks for the replies...Actually I was very mistaken on the hp rating. After some research it is only 73 hp stock. After talking to my B-I-L, he said that was correct ( I must have misheard him ) but with the aftermarket parts and work it should be about 80 hp. From what I have found it is comparable to a new SV650s (both stock). Also worth noting it is a 2valve which produces a bit more torque on the low end.

Well the Duck 900ss is definity not a beginner's bike !, You just cannot compare the GS 500F to it. Personaly I'd take the Duck!

Gabriel...I can definitely agree that it isn't as nice looking as the newer sport bikes, but the picture you may have found doesn't do it justice.

A few factors that I'm looking at are...

1. Not as big of a step up as a ZZR
2. Can pay for in cash (no payment)
3. Buying now I won't have to share with my wife (the GS500 is hers)

Man I'd just on it in a heartbeat!!!!!!!!!

If nothing else, buy it and let it sit till you feel comfortable on it. But if he wants to get rid of it don't give him the chance to sell it to someone else.

I personally think the ducati looks pretty cool. What color is your B-I-L's bike? Do you forsee any heavy maintenance costs in the near future? If not,
I would say go for it!

Nothing wrong with getting the Duck and garaging it for a while to give you more experience on the 500.

Well you can of course buy it but I'd still gain more experience on the GS first. It's still quite an upgrade from the GS so be careful and keep the shiny side up!

Edit: Just saw what Ext1jdh wrote...

And I'm looking forward to those pics.

Both he and the original owner took very good care of it. He told me about everything he had done this season but I can't remember it all. He isn't as anal as I am when it comes to keeping my vehicles clean, so there is a bit of dirt and road grime in the nooks and crannies. Mechanically it is very sound and I completely trust his word.

Well in that case I would say its a great deal, my friend was selling a 2001 honda f4i for only 2 grand, now that its sold i wish i had jumped on it because it was a great deal for a bike with barely 10,000 miles. I would say if you have to money and you will eventually upgrade than why not? The benefit outwieghs the cost factor just based on the fact that its a DUCATI, and why do you all call a ducati a duck???

I have to agree with the others here. Get the Duck and park it, gain more experience and then move on up. I love Ducati's personally. I would love to pick up a Monster somewhere someday! Ride safe and good luck.

I will not take a hit on this one, instead I will blame it on the Nyquil I've taken do to a cold I believe I have LOL. Duccati=Duc makes perfect sense.
