Ducati's are affectionately called Duck's buy their owners and admirers, Just like Moto Guzzi's are called a Goose by their owners and admirers.

I have just become the very proud owner of a 2000 Moto Guzzi jackal and have applied for a vanity license plate that will read "I HONK" and boy does it ever!

Sweet, I cant lie the newer Ducati's I have seen(not to discredit the older models) are bad a$$ machines, this was the first time I actually heard the word Duck used to reference them. Usually I hear the word MONSTER, Brad Bitt the actor rides a sick a$$ ducati must be nice. Ducati.com

I say buy the duck, but remember one thing: BE CAREFUL !

GS500=forgiving if you make a mistake
Duck=bust your arse if you make a mistake

I started on a GS500 back in 2000, ended up with 5000 miles before I had to sell it to buy a house. Short lapse in time and now I have the M50 (which too is forgiving). The GS tought me more about my limits as a rider than the limits of the bike. I'm a better rider today because of the GS (and the "DRAGON")

My B-I-L is coming by @ 6 p.m. to let me ride it. Don't fear...I'll be careful. I will make a decision tomorrow.

Thanks again for all the great input!

I now own a 1991 Ducati 900ss Supersport! I took it out for a ride and it was fun. First getting on it I was scared, but after a few trips around the block, I was able to get accustomed to the throttle. It's a bit rough under 3,000 rpms, but above that it really comes to life. I rode it up to about 6,000 rpms slowly (no wheelies for me thank you) and it just sounds beautiful. Mechanically it seems great. I really liked the feel of the dry clutch.
The headlights and taillights are a little dated, but for $500, I can update to new dual round headlights and led taillights. Like I expected, it definitely needs to be cleaned up and has a few minor blemishes.
It has a full stainless dual exhaust with carbon fiber cans(not sure of brand),Stage 2 Jet kit, and K&N element.
Also with it are some unused extra parts, weatherproof cover, helmet and service manual.
For anyone who hasn't heard a Ducati before, I would say it has gurgle of a cruiser combined with the sound of a Supersport.
I made out the check today and after dinner tomorrow I will pick it up with all the extras. If I have time I will post pics, but definitely look for them Thurs..

get the DUCATI
some people don't like them but anyone who has one is proud of it. A friend of mine said that owning a ducati is equal of dating an italian supermodel...
High maintanance but sex is good.

HI, thats a really nice 900ss, do you still have her ?.
I started off on a honda 125 superdream and rode that for about 2 years and passed my test, then i went directly to a 900ss which is marginally older than your one. My first test ride i was like omg look what ive been let loose on and its mega loud compaired to most of the newer models. I let the clutch out as slowly as possible and feathered the throttle as gentle as posible and i got in to 3rd gear and thought ill open it up now its in a higher gear and I did not expect the acceleration to be so strong. I brought the bike and have had it ever since. I have to say its an incredibly easy bike to ride at any speed except the judder from the engine on low revs. The handling is one of the best bikes ive ever rode as its such confidence inspiring through the twisties and light and 10 times better with new tyres. After many years of owning her i have personally found the more i ride her the better she seems to handle or maybe its me lol.

Heres my bike but your need a pair of red/blue 3d glasses to view it. It was an early attemp of 3d when i didnt know what i was doing but here she is.

So what do you think of your bike now you have had much more experience ?
I test rode a 1098 and even without the power my bike is just as much fun.

A friend of mine had that vintage awhile back. Low 70s hp stock, about 80 with cans and a jet kit is about right. He managed mid 12s in the 1/4. That's what my friend's did on the dyno. Very nice power curve, with the torque curve being smooth too. Nice and neutral handling. Money and finances aside, it would be a good bike to learn a lot on.
Maintenence?? I've never adjusted Desmo valves, but I've heard they are a bit more tedious to do. 2500 doesn't sound horrible if you want to buy into the Ducati cachet.

Ive read of 11 second 1/4 mile times. Most of it is down to the rider skill but its a great road bike and track tool and even great for beginners. Its so easy to ride fast without trying. Im happy with mine

The engine and the desmo's are not like they make out they are. Well there not on the 2 valve 900ss models. If you look on this link you can view a 2 part video on how easy it really is to adjust the valves. The 2 valve desmo is much better than most would think.
