Smile So don't let the cups drive you...........

A group of alumni, highly established in their careers, got together to visit their old university lecturer.

Conversation soon turned into complaints about stress in work and life.
Offering his guests coffee, the lecturer went to the kitchen and returned with a large pot of coffee and an assortment of cups: porcelain, plastic, glass, some plain-looking and some expensive & exquisite, telling them to help themselves to hot coffee.

When all the students had a cup of coffee in hand, the lecturer said:

"If you noticed, all the nice-looking, expensive cups were taken up, leaving behind the plain and cheap ones.

While it is but normal for you to want only the best for yourselves, that is the source of your problems and stress".

What all of you really wanted was coffee, not the cup, but you consciously

went for the better cups and are eyeing each other's cups."

"Now, if Life is coffee, then the jobs, money and position in society are the cups.

They are just tools to hold and contain Life, but the quality of Life doesn't change."

Sometimes, by concentrating only on the cup, we fail to enjoy the coffee in it."

So don't let the cups drive you........ENJOY the COFFEE instead.

Say this joke when you are broke and homeless darn the coffee you need the cup. I once heard someone say regardless of how much you are in love with your wife, girlfriend etc... Love wont buy you a meal if you both are broke. I understand the principal behind what you are saying though it is very profound but i doubt if a majority of Americans would want to hear about the coffee they wan the cup, thats why we are a capitolistic society. MONEY MONEY MONEY MONEY, America I believe is ruled by MONEY, SEX and POWER(Governement). Your story is beautiful because ppl do presume that if they have a better CUP that there coffee would be richer, sweeter etc... A BETTER LIFE.

Money can't buy you happiness.

Poverty either.

Consider this. Imagine coffee are boobs, or in other words life is boobs (which I am happen to believe ) - Bra is your cup. Now would you want boobs in a Victoria Secret bra or one from Walmart?

Never rub another man's rhubarb! - Now there's some advice!

sunny, haven't you learned anything living in Texas?

A hitman is expensive. And efficient. Haven't you seen Pulp Fiction? All you need are a couple of crackheads and a couple hundred bucks. The'll make sure the 'victim' dies slowly and painfully, and the'll never remember who hired them.

Very nice GZ250.

I would NEVER pretend that having materialistic things is pretty nice, but I have and have had some nice materialistic things in my life and NONE brought me the happinness that the non-materialistic stuff does.

Spending time with my aging parents, playing around with my kids, the holidays with brothers/sisters, and the private times with the Mrs. -- now that's my coffee, and no cup could hold priority over that.

I often hear people dreaming about winning the lottery - at the moment, there are a couple of lotteries running here with jackpots over 20 million euros.

I remind these people about some simple math:

An average, well-paid person may earn, say $75,000 per year? And the average person has a 40 year working life, assuming he or she starts earning money around 20 years old, and works until 60.

$75,000 x 40 = $3,000,000.

You can earn a comfortable living all of your life, and you've earned $3 million dollars. Anything more than this (like CEOs, "athletes" and celebreties who take home $25 million a year) is just obscene.

If I were to win a lottery, I wouldn't really know what to do with that kind of money. After I pay off my apartments and my car, put enough on the side that the annual interest pays my current salary (so I don't HAVE to work anymore), I would have tied up or spent about $4 million. I would probably drop a million on the side (set up a college scholarship program and trust funds for my girlfriend's daughter and my godchild), and donate most of the rest to charity.

I don't see how money doesn't = happiness. I'm pretty sure no one in poverty is happy. Seriously, if anyone was thrown out on the street right now but they still had their family..and a box..they wouldn't be happy. Of course, you can't really be happy if you have like, 955million dollars and no one to share your time with. So really a good solid Family + a comfortable living(money) = Happiness.

Anyways, that's how I've always seen it.
