| Hey Everyone, New to forum just wanted to drop a line say what's up and little info on the bike. I've seen a few topics already that talk about this but wanted to discuss first bikes for first time riders. I must say i completely agree with many of you that post here indicating that the first bike is similar to your first car in that it should be the one you learn to hone your skills before going all out. When I started looking, i was considering the ninja's, gsx's, etc. My father, a more reserved rider encouraged me into getting a cruiser and i ended up with a 2001 Honda Shadow. Great beginner bike. Low seat height helped me get comfortable with the movement of the bike, smaller engine and only 4 gears kept me under control and as a result I became a much better rider. After about 2 years i went to a bike show and figured it was time for an upgrade since the Shadow had trouble doing 70 on the highway. Found a great condition used 2001 Yamaha FZ-1. Sat on it and it was comfortable from minute one. Once i got it out on the street, i realized that had i gotten a crotch rocket right away, I would have been statistic. But my riding on a smaller bike that taught me control, allowed me to move to a larger and much faster bike that I controlled. My father and I have ridden over 15000 miles in the last year or 2 and no incidents (well ok i've dumped each of mine once at a stop but no damage). My cousin (who we tried to convince to get a smaller starter bike) decided to get a GSX 600 and has had it about a month and has already gotten into one accident and is riding wheelies. Not the best way to start a riding livelyhood. hopefully the pic shows of my ride. later all. |

| welcome to the forum. sounds like you learned on a honda vlx. i learned on the exact same bike, right down to the year. poor little bike, i put that thing through hell. all in the name of science. its good to see you made the transition to a sport bike with no problems. those things scare the bejezus out of me. but it sure is a purdy bike.
