The traffic laws here (in Switzerland) are very strict. You drive on the right, and pass on the left. Passing on the right is a serious violation, and will result in a license suspension and heavy fine. Lane splitting is also illegal, although some bikers here do choose to "risk it".

A police officer in the Phoenix area was nice enough to verbally inform me of the legal consequences of lane splitting in this state.

It's dangerous anywhere, but far less tolerated in any state other than California (where it's legal). The last thing you want is a flashlight to the face or an open door.

I actually saw a cop chase a guy down and stop him for that very thing on I45 in Shenandoa (between Houston and Conroe) a copella months ago. I understand the temptation when you suddenly find yourself in a parkinglot instead of an interstate.

I'll try this again...(stupid internet...)

I got stuck on my Bandit once on one of the bridges in Montreal and there was no forward motion for over 45 minutes. When the engine got so hot that it started to smoke, I made a judgement call and pulled out onto the paved, wide and vacant shoulder. I kept it in second and rode slowly until I got clear of the gridlock.

Lanesplitting is the norm here and in most situations is legal - where it isn't it is still "tolerated" - the police generally ignore it as long as it's done safely.

If drivers were somewhat rational and aware (they are pretty good here) it would be much safer. While I do it here I'd never do it in North America, except in unique situations like I mentioned above.

I tried riding on someones shoulders once, but the wind was something terrible. Plus curves scared me.
