Default A muffler hit me in the head!!

I was heading down the highway earlier today on my way to a friend's graduation ceremony. I was rolling along in the right lane doing about 75 or so and coming up on a full size van in the left. I see up the road some sort of pipe laying across his lane, well apparently he didn't see it. He ran right over that thing, and it popped up in the air, started spinning, and came across into my lane. I ducked down and headed for the far right side of the lane but it glanced off the top of my helmet. Gave me a little headache but that was it! Luckily nobody behind me hit it. D Klein, that's crazy that you and me both get hit with mufflers within a couple of days. Makes you wonder, what the heck are people's exhaust systems doing chilling in the middle of the highway? lol.

Then on the way home a semi jacknifed in front of me and went through the concrete barrier, where a car proceeded to run into the trailer. Luckily (and how I don't know) nobody was seriously injured.

Stay safe out there guys, Memorial Day Weekend is a dangerous weekend to be riding!

Holy crap. What the heck's going on down there. Good to hear you're OK CMan and that you had your brainbucket on (not that you wouldn't).

cmant you have to be the luckiest guy on the planet. It seems every few days I read about some crazy stuff that happens to you. If you are old enough you should play the lottery. With the kind of luck you have getting out of stuff that would kill the rest of us you would surely win.

Either that or there is some yanking of the chain going on...

Remember the biker wisdom.."you wanna know what going on...Look five cars forward"

Glad you were not hurt. The key to staying alive is being alert. Strange things have been know to be left in the roadway. Road kill is a bad one. Exhaust systems are pretty gnarly...but could you imagine a wheel weight from a bull dozer. One of my fellow workers hit one with his RX-7...tore the undercarriage out from the car. Imagine a bike hitting such a thing. It was dark and the object was black. The piece missed his seat bottom by 5 inches.

Yea I was looking pretty far ahead, which is why I saw it long in advance. I backed off so the van could move over, but he didn't. I thought it would kick it off to the side of the road or something, but that sucker got airborne! I wasn't expecting that, otherwise I would have backed off more (except it might have landed before I reached it then, and I might have been in more trouble!).

How big is a wheel weight from a bulldozer? I'm only familiar with the .25-2.00 oz. weights that we use on cars.

Considering I'm about 3 weeks away from my first bike/license - this sure is reassuring

Great to hear you're okay though bud.

It would be really crazy if it was the same muffler.

Say about 3.5 ft in diameter and 12 inches across. Caused the car to get airborne.

Glad your OK!!! I had a deer go over my head once, the car in front of me hit it, and sent it air born, it spun right past my head. It was dark, and I never saw it, till it flew past me, showering me with blood.

If you got hit hard enough to get a headache, you should replace the helmet. Get it checked out at the very least.

Glad to hear you're OK.

this reminds me of an accident last year in fort worth. guy on a bike saw what looked like a gray box in his lane. so he decided to kick it out of the way of the riders behind him.
it was one of those electric meter boxes.

always dodge that stuff and never make any assumptions about what you think it might be.

With the loudness of some vehicles on the road they probably didn't know that their exhaust system fell off.
