Default vacation

Drove out from Ft. Worth to Phoenix, then will go on to Lake Mead, Grand Canyon, Lake Powell, etc. Made room on the waverunner trailer for the M50, though I've not yet had a chance to unload and ride it. The desert and mountains are awesome, and the dust devils are pretty hairy to drive through while pulling a trailer! Saw a lot of bikes on the road, wonder what those sudden winds are like for them.... I'll be checking the boards whenever I can get connected, how about some advice on good areas to ride from you Phoenix locals?

20 years ago my Dad was a Park Ranger at Lake Mead. Great place to recreate. If you get a chance, the road from Kingman to Wickenberg used to be a lot of fun, great views of desert, lots of twisties. I'm not sure what it is like now. You'd get a chance to go through Nothing, AZ.

Looks like awesome riding country.

Tough choice, ride the waves or ride the roads.

Enjoy

ps; Raining here.

Two popular rides: Tortilla Flats - Take US-60 East towards Mesa, Exit at AZ-88 East. This twisty road leads you to Canyon Lake, and to a restaurant that is a popular destination for motorcyclists. It's best to go during the week if possible, because the roads can become crowded. It takes about an hour to get there, depending on where in Phoenix you are.

Another good ride is to take US-60 West to Wickenburg, then get on AZ-89 and take it North through Prescott, Jerome, and all the way up to Sedona, even. You go through a few mountain ranges, so there are lots of twisties and a few flat spots between mountains. All of the towns you go through have lots of cool places to stop.

The wife and I took the M out to Tortilla Flat today, awesome ride! Thanks for the tip on that one. Ate lunch at the saloon, and left our dollar bill and business card for their wall collection...

Now I'm extremely jealous of you AZ riders, this stuff is great! Superstition Mountains and Canyon Lake are beautiful...

Wife's first time on back of the 800, and she was a real trooper only asking for minimal rest stops. No chance to charge the hairpin turns on 88, but sure did get to put the bike to the test through the mountains two up. Pulls just fine, and we're both big people.

Looking forward to some more rides in the Phoenix area before we move on...

The best part about being a rider in AZ is arguably the ability to ride year-round (if you can handle the heat). However, I've only been here since July, so the only noteworthy rides I know of are the ones I mentioned above.

Glad you had a great time!

Just got back from a solo ride out to South Mountain Park... Man, what a neat ride up to the summit! Went everywhere there was to go up there, Dobbins Lookout, the TV towers, etc. All twisties all the time, best little mountain ride I've ever been on. Can't remember anywhere else with as many turns and switchbacks all in a row! Fantasic views in all directions. Probably shaved a quarter inch off my chicken strips....

I noticed the mountain bike in your photos texrider. If you get the chance, South Mountain has great mountain bike trails.

Hey y'all, been having a great time in AZ! This little update is from the computer room at Page, AZ public library. We're camped at Lake Powell, after spending a few days in Sedona... Wow, was Oak Creek Canyon great! I rode the M50 from the Viewpoint at the top, and down to town, back and forth, just lovin' every curve and breath-taking view... Perfect weather for everything, and even stopped at Slide Rock Park on the way out.

Lake Mohave was quite crowded on the Memorial Day weekend, but also a very beautiful place to camp. I did end up waiting in a three hour line at the boat ramp to recover the waverunners one evening... Phoenix and Sedona have been the best riding opportunities so far. We'll get up into the Utah mountains before heading home, hope to ride some there. The M50 really likes the altitudes, getting 52 mpg, up from the 46 I get at home. I'll have pics to share when I get my laptop back online... Ride safe!

Found a WI-FI spot here in Albuquerque, so here's some pics of the trip... Starting with Lake Mohave, Sedona, Grand Canyon, Lake Powell, Zion Canyon. (Had a technical problem with the Phoenix pics). It's all downhill from here...

Could have pulled the whole rig with the Vulcan...LOL!

The Chevy did OK for just a 350 gasoline engine, and it has good A/C...

A youngster like yourself will have fun on the trip you're planning, enjoy!

Two places I'll say are a must do with a motorcycle; Zion Canyon in Utah, and Oak Creek Canyon in Sedona, Arizona. Either one is worth the trip from anywhere!

Here's a little place I saw on the road south of Zion...
