| I was cruising the other day and a rider coming in the opposite direction waved and tapped his helmet. I wave back and wondered what the tap on the helmet was. Today, I read off another site that tapping the helmet is the universal sign for a policeman just up the road. Is this true? Is a tap on the helmet the sign for a cop just up the road? Thanks and safe riding to you, Blue Max |

| haven't ever heard this before, but the other day I started to give a low bar wave to an oncoming bike, then realized it was a cop as I sped by. He never turned around.

| 100% Title Free ![]() | The only time a motorcycle cop ever waved back was when I was on a canyon ride (between canyons). He was going about as fast as I was in the opposite direction, and had a smile as big as mine. I'd be smiling like that if I got paid to cruise around in the middle of nowhere on a bike.

| he didnt wave back, but he looked. I guess as long as I don't tap for a cop to a cop I will be alright.

| I usually wave both hands frantically and scream like a little girl. Think I'll start doing that helmet tap from now on.

| Yes, this is a signal for 'cop ahead', but it is far from universal. In the Southern Cruisers and several other riding clubs, tapping the helmet is the sign for "I am leaving the group- do not follow me".

| Kickstand Operator ![]() | I've always seen, and done the "point hand upright, move it in a circle", which signifies the spinning of cop car lights. At least, that's what we do in the mid western part of the US. Cops have always waved back to me.
