Default Sold the 250!

Not technically sold yet, but I took it over to my buddy's house tonight. He's gonna be paying for it this summer when he's working (still in school). We went to a middle school parking lot where I taught him to ride, basically I repeated the stuff they taught me in the MSF course (something he's planning on taking anyway). Then we hit the residential streets for a few minutes.

I've never felt more responsibility placed on me than tonight when we were riding, knowing that his life is basically in my hands and how well I teach him to ride. It was very sobering. I know that when I ride with him I need to be extra careful and not do stupid things that he might try to imitate.

So if anybody has any pointers that I can use to make the teaching experience a little easier then let me know! Thanks all!
-Chris

When your finished riding or about to park, hit the Engine Kill switch. I've seen fellow student riders pop the clutch and lurch forward because they were looking to find Neutral.

I found a way to show my son counter stearing, I had tried to explane it but he just didnt get it, he kept saying no if you push on the right thats like turning left.
we were 2up and first while siting still took my left hand off the handelbars
and had him push slightly on my right elbow just enough to move my arm forward about 1/4 in. Then I took him out on the road and at about 40mph, I had him do it again the same way, as soon as the bike moved to the right he let off. We got home and he says "Ok that dont make sense" lol so I explaned it all to him again, now he beleives me and is starting to try it.

Good deal, Chris. I know how you feel about the responsibility. That's why I've never pressed Jolene to get her own bike.

I intend to teach my son how to ride a bicycle using countersteering, so it's natural right from the start. Push right to go right.

Your best bet would be to get your friend to an MSF class. Hurt report statistics show that people taught by friends are more likely to crash than are people who just teach themselves. By far, trained riders are far less likely to crash.

I was one of them. So i re-taught myself from scratch. Also one of my buds wants to ride. He understands how to do it, so he tried on day in a parking lot. I didn't really tell him much of anything at first hoping his instincts would let him handle it. Then I explained any corrections afterwards. Seemed to work, but with the responsibility thing, thats as far as I want to go. Hopefully we will take the MSF together this summer. If not I guess I am on my lonesome (for the class). I am pretty certain if he gets a bike, he wont ride until he takes the class, aside from parking lot practice.

Well he says he wants to take the MSF course, and I'm encouraging him to do it. He starts working in 3 weeks so he should have some money pretty soon to take one.

Seeing as how Chris has taken his riding very seriously, I'd say he's above par when it comes to teaching a friend, and that friend is lucky to have him.
