Default My first time riding w/ passenger

So today I finally decided to let my girlfriend come for a ride. This is only the begining of my second ever riding season and have never had a passenger before. It went pretty well and we did about 50 miles of country twisty roads. I was a little concerned about how bike was responding to her movements. (only 100lbs) everytime we came to a curve she would lean into it so she could see and it was throwing me off my groove in the turns. having to compensate was a bit nerve racking not knowing when it was coming.

Anyone else have this problem or give their first time passengers instructions on what not to do?

The one and only time i took my girlfriend out last year I tried to explain to her how to be a passenger. I figured it was better that i told her before hand. I plan on taking her out quite a bit his year. I figure that she'll get the hang of it.

I could feel the bike pull to one side everytime she switched shoulders to look over. I guess it's just something to get used to.

The first time I ever got on a bike with hubby, he gave me a 10-minute long lesson on how to be a passenger. Really, the best advice he gave me to start off with was to just lean into him and keep my upper body in line with his whenever we were going to turn. After a while of doing that, I got a feel of the amount of leans in the curves with the speed. Good luck with that.

Aloha,
Kehau

Was reading your age on the profile. Now where are the pictures?

I’m just screwing around.

But before anyone gets on and off your bike make sure they know the rules, like night_wolf posted. Surprises tend to be stressful.

I can never have and will never have a passenger on my bike. If I am to die I will die alone, I could never live with the guilt if I were to live. Doesn't matter even after taking the MSF classes and riding for years whatever no passengers for me.

Ride a while & I guarantee you that your attitude about a passenger will change!

It won't, I know myself, I am already planning on taking the rear pegs off and putting one of those fiberglass rearseat deletes on. I don't even want the option.

You guys have it SO easy over there. As I've posted before ... to get your endorsement (license) over here, you have first pass a 20-minute manuever test (circles, figure-8s, slalom, slow lane and a emergency stop from 35mph). Once you pass that, you sign up for the road test, WHERE THE INSPECTOR RIDES PILLION for about 25 to 30 minutes. The test takes you through residential areas (lots of right-of-way intersections), industrial zones (lots of blind intersections and driveways), and through some mountain twisties.

Your riding teacher will show you how and what to instruct a passenger, and will give you lots of practice with him riding behind you. By the time you are taking the license test, you've got several hours of 2-up experience.

I tell them to just keep their upper body straight with the bike. Like they are strapped to the sissy bar or their back is a 2x4. I tell them whent he bike leans to sit upright and lean with the bike. They will figure it out once they read that link.

So, nobody rides in a car with you either?

Here's my simple passenger instructions. Two rules.

1.) Never put your feet down until I tell you to.
2.) Look over my shoulder when I turn the bike, in the direction I am turning.

Rule number 2 is a very simple, and easy to understand way to get your passenger to lean with you.
