My name is Roxie, Im 26 & finally got my first motorcycle. Its an oldy but in great condition. 1981 Suzuki GS400.I havent had a chance to ride it yet (& I need to write for my license) Ive been riding dirt bikes all my life but this thing kinda scares me.lol. I rode it around the yard & its different from what Im used to. Any advise for a young girl starting off on the street.

Take the Motorcycle Course. It is the street smarts and awareness you really need. There are also some good books and videos out there.
NightWolf is a member and teaches in Ontario, he will pipe up with info.

That is a good bike to get you on the road and build up some seat time.

GEAR, is very important on the road.
Ride safe and enjoy.

Hey Roxie! Another fellow Canadian. I'm not too far from you as I'm in Ottawa. Let's hope the weather warms up soon.

Do you have your M1 or M2?

Roxie... (you shoulda stayed in school perhaps?)

Welcome and now here's lesson one... you're gonna pay (especially around here) if you ain't careful how you word things...

Think of the road like everyone is out to get you.

If you can, imagine someone pulling out in front of you from a lane, or changing lanes suddenly, or a left turning vehicle popping out in front of that truck that's in your left lane beside you... that'll get you a long way.

Ride with confidence and ride defensively - these aint mutually exclusive.

Go to a parking lot after hours (Sunday afternoon is great) and practice low speed cornering, circles, starts and quick stops... and take the course... and never assume the road ahead is safe - if you can't see what's on it, assume someone dropped gravel, oil, or an anvil just around the corner.

And enjoy life.

Nice ride. My first was an '82 GS450L. Great bike to start on, and easy as ell to wrench on.

Like everyone else said, take a class. Wear all the gear. Anticipate everything.

A little bit late on the welcome, but good luck during your MSF class.
