Stoppie? I didn't know there was a name for that. So what makes a good stoppie if that was a poor one?

SQUID: my last roomate, who, yesterday, was telling me how he learned to do a burnout on his GS500f, and at the end of the burnout the bike decided to wheely with him on it and he fortunetly ended up ok. Hes also going to move up to gixxer later this year, just for the extra power cause he wants something faster than his car.

It sounds like he already has more then he can responsibily handle.

These are the stories that scare my parents. My step mother and my father have been calling me all day with exscuses for why I shouldn't get the bike. I just hope the best and that I end up enjoying it, but I truely have no desire and definatly hope that I never have a thirst for speed while on it. I also am making the mistake of a 600 for starting, but I intend to drive around in parking lots and neighborhoods long long long before I get out on the street.

Here are a few suggestions to a good start:
1) TAKE A MSF BEGINNERS COURSE
2) Take the time to pratice and learn the bike before you get out on the road.
3) Be responsible
4) Respect the bike. It has more then enough power to kill you or get you killed.
5) See 1 and 3
Good luck to you and welcome aboard.

Depends on you. Me, even a good one won't get so much as a golf clap from me if done on a public street. I would normally try to locate a sample on google, but I don't feel like it right now.

Oh, it's much easier to be a squid than it is to be a skilled rider. Remember, any retard can twist the throttle, but not everyone can ride his/her bike to its full capabilities. Then again, there are those who fool themselves with delusions of grandeur...

In BMX they call a "stoppie" and Endo. You hit the front brake and let the rear wheel come up. You can link it into other tricks like a cherry picker. I used to flatland BMX which was partially why I'm interested in getting a motorcycle, but definetly not to do tricks on. You only endoe'd at very slow speeds for obvious reasons, I'd imagine it's the same for a "stoppie".

Oh yah, very unfortunate about the wreck. I'd hate to walk around my big rig and see body parts smeared across the bed...ew.

That is no excuse.

Most skilled riders will never ride his/her bike to it's full capabilities. If you keep pushing the envelope, it will catch up to you sooner or later.

Colorado Cajun, I'm trying to make sense of your response above. Are you trying to tell me I have squid-like tendences?

Ever heard this before?:

I can't get a job w/o "experience"...I can't get "experience" w/o a job .

Hmmm...seems to me that...some...of the world's greatest inventions came from experiments .

Sometimes you gotta just grab the BULL by the horns & go for it!

All to true, but I don't get how it pertains to squids.

because it doesnt, squidism is a way of thinking, experimenting is not squidism. Now, its likely at some point I will wheely, intentionall, or pull a stoppie, intentionally, or even burn out intentionally. However, my thought in doing these is that I want to know what its like to happen in case it does for whatever reason, the same reason I drive just a little offroad with the jeep, and every car I buy I thrash through a snowy parking lot and such, I want to know how my vehicle will react in just about every situation, so that I can more skillfully controll it. HIS reasons were, and are, "this is cool, man I am fast, whoa awsome!" Might we come to the same conclusion and skill by our different mindsets for this approach? sure, I am sure at some point I will be able to successfully get my bike up to and hold a wheely and comfortable bring it down, I am sure he will too, I am sure we will both be able to pull stoppies well, heck we could probably do them next to each other in sync with each other (we do this on mtn bikes actuallly) and I am sure we will both be able to roast the tire comfortably and skillfully without going flying in a wheely. BUT, aside from controlled parking lots and such to practice some control skills, I wont be doing these on the street, I garuntee he will pull out his whole bag of tricks to "impress the cars" in traffic, on the interstate, everywhere, at the drop of a hat. Isnt that what squidism is?

*LOL* No! That was not my intention at all. I don't know you nor have I seen you ride therefore I wouldn't judge your riding. I understood what you were saying and my response was strickly my opinion on the matter. What you were saying is very true but I don't think that being unskilled or skilled gives anyone the right to act stupid on a bike or in car for that matter. Like the guy doing the "Stopie", he was trying to show off oviously, but he could have just as easly rear ended the car he stopped behind. Where I always see people here doing the dumb crap they do is here in town on the busy roads. My thoughts are if someone wants to be careless, go somewhere where there are open roads and no traffic, and do it there. That way, when something happens because of foolishness, they aren't affecting anyone else. Anyway, as I said, I wasn't trying to tell you that you have squid tendences. The only one here that knows if you do is you.

Thanks for your clarification Colorado Cajun. You and I do have similar views concerning squids. I do agree with your assessment that most skilled riders will never ride their bikes to their full capabilities, especially on the street. Professional racers, however, are a different breed and are trained and paid to exploit the bikes they race. Since many of us do not race anyway, it is pointless to push the envelope when riding your bike.

I haven't modded much nor am I mechanically inclined. However, I do try to offer up advice on safe riding practices and chase squids away from this board.

Ride long, ride safe!

Speaking of which..

A couple of days ago, in the early morning sun, a 22-year old Fort Hood soldier was traveling "at a high rate of speed", so saith the investigators.. and a 17-year old local high school student was making a left-hand turn into a business, and BOOM! The biker hit the car and almost immediately, his right arm was severed. The bike flipped and flew and landed in a white pickup truck that was in the turning lane [good aim!]. Driver of truck injured, but not badly. Motourcyclist? I'm not so sure. Speed limit is only 50 at location of collision.

I feel pretty badly for the guy. I'm a bit younger than him, and I couldn't imagine losing one of my limbs so early in life. By the way, it was a 2006 Yamaha R1, MSRP $11300. At his age, I'm almost certain that he did not have collision insurance. It was his right arm, so I reckon he'll have to learn to use his left arm so he can write the bank a monthly check for the huge vehicle note that they are still going to expect.

Ride safely and defensively, please everyone..

and ride on wind!

Army Knowledge Online constantly updates soldiers dying in traffic accidents, and motorcyles/high speeds/youth seems to dominate the reports. They list the incidents as a 'force protection' measure, trying to impress upon soldiers that they need to keep their heads for their own safety and the Army's readiness. It's sad to read about under 30 soldiers getting killed on bikes or in cars...and some of these kids are back from Iraq in one piece, only to die in an accident.

One of the guys in my motor pool told me about a guy in his unit out in Fort Riley, KS...he'd take his crotch rocket (don't remember what kind of bike Josh said it was) out onto the highway right outside the gate, go from one exit to another at 190 MPH- WITHOUT A HELMUT!! No idea what ever became of that guy...hopefully nothing bad though.

This is one thing that scares me about my kids learning to ride
so I been showing them any footage I can find on stupid stunts with bad resualts. I know some of it looks neat but I will not try any of it myself, and am hoping my kids dont either. Leave it to the Pros, Stunt people and Racers.
