Default Yamaha is not happy!

Read it online today. After the fiasco of the R6's falsely advertised redline Yamaha is buying back the bikes from dissatisfied owners. Good news if you want and R6 for cheap!! Yamaha dealers may have a good amount of used ones soon.

Thanks, but I'll keep my CBR!

Here's an article I found:http://www.motorcycledaily.com/01february06_redline.htm

This topic is also picking up in the sportrider.com forums.

Oh for crying out loud! Does it change your motorcycling experience if you can only rev to 16,000? Nope. Whiny posers.

That being said, Yamaha did blow it with their ads. At least they're taking responsibility.

+1 on the posers. If not for a chassis dyno they never would have known.

I'm starting to have this funny feeling that I'm gaining the affection of yet another Quebecois admin.

Anyhoo, +1 on the posers. Just shut up and color! The R6 is NOT a F1 race car.

If Yamaha billed the R6 as revving up to 17,500 rpm and on this plane of existence it falls more than 1000 rpm short - well they are basically lying scum. No cheers for Yamaha's PR liars. They rigged the tachs too? Damn, that is pretty low.....

My bike has a redline and a rev-limiter, which I have hit ONCE, when I was passing a car on a mountain pass, and was accelerating like crazy to get past him before the next curve. The redline is absoulutely UNIMPORTANT. The power curve for any internal combustion engine shows that the maximum power is reached in the middle of the RPM curve, not at the top of it. My bike redlines over 9,000 rpm, but reaches maximum horsepower at 6,800 rpm, and maximum torque at 5,000 rpm.

The redline is important to people who are trying to buy an image instead of a bike - they want to rev it up all the way to 17,500 in their garage when they're drinking a few brewskis with their "riding" buddies. But it was wrong for Yamaha to flagrantly misrepresent this in their marketing.

@ inspiron: True, but that's a result of intentional tuning and not an inherent characteristic of the engine.

Clint, I know. Every engine is a comprimise. The engineers have to choose between longevity and performance. There are certainly some physical aspects to this curve, too ... like how fast mixture can enter the chamber and how fast exhaust can be pushed out. At higher revs, the valves are the limiting factor - that's why the Wankel (rotary) engine was interesting: No valves, no theoretically no redline. (Of course, the Wankel engine has other issues like vibration and lower effiency to deal with).

A formula-1 racing engine now has to hold up for 2 consecutive races, so all together, it may run about 600 miles between rebuilds. As a consumer, I expect my bike engine to go 5000 miles between oil changes and to run more than 75000 miles before I have to tear it down.

False advertising, is false advertising, and it's just wrong. and if they rigged the tach's to, well that's just twice as wrong.

Well it may be wrong for them to lie and mislead the public. But seriously,, I don't think it very healthy to be revving to 17500 anyways,, if you are into revving your engine that high then kudos to you. Some may call it cool,,,, I would call you a fool.

Absolutely no sense in it.

"Why did you want to climb Mount Everest?"

"Because it was there."

Why rev an engine to the red-line?
Because it is there.
