Great idea! I myself am debating to see if I'm gonna retake the Experienced Rider Course this Spring. Never enough practice for emergency situations.

Default MSF Course - A+

If you haven't taken it yet, make the investment! This course provides more beneficial information and techniques than you can possibly learn on your own. The instructors have a wealth of knowledge and experience. The course I took in CA cost approximately $250.00.

If your wife is a DOD ID card holder, it should be free for her as well regardless of military status.

Thats cool that they offer it to you guys for free. I'm in the Navy, and they don't offer it for free here. We have to pay for it.

I'm in the Air Force. The MSF class was free for me because it was taught on base. Before we had the course on base, we would have to take it at a town over 1 hour from base. Although we would have to initially pay, we were reimbursed by the AF upon successful completion. Thankfully, I was able to take both the beginner and experienced courses on base.

I'm curious, was your MSF class taught at your base?

I'm the wife and took both the BRC and ERC free of charge. I don't know if it's different for each base but at least the ones we have been to, it has been free of charge to anyone with the proper base access. Active Duty, Dependents, Reserve, Guard, Retired, etc. Even Federal Gov't., Civil Service, AAFES, DFAS, and NAF employees.

I guess its another case of higher quality of life for the Air Force! They offer it here on base every once in a while through MWR, but we still have to pay. Its $165 for a 3 day course offered roughly once a quarter. Its kinda a pain cause you then have to ask for a day off from work. Or, I can go out in town and take the class in two days for $189, and its offered every weekend. Either way, its coming out of my pocket.

BTW, thats what I'll be doing tomorrow and Sunday!!

Man, I wish the MSF course was free DoD-wide. Nevertheless, good luck this weekend. Regardless of cost, the MSF course is time and money well invested. I would also recommend taking the ERC about one year after completing the BRC. It's only one day long with more time spent riding and is a refresher of everything you learned in the BRC.

BTW Jason, welcome to the site and good choice on the bike. The C50 is a hard bike to beat!

Default I hope you can ride bikes made for midgets!

I took the course last Oct for $175.00 in CT. It was very good and I learned a bunch. The thing is though, the bikes are small and uncomfortable. I had to lift my leg up , back and forward just to apply the rear brake. The other thing is, they do not cancel, we spent an entire Saturday in the cold rain (It rained for 8 hours straight) The good thing about that is I learned not to hit the brakes to hard in the rain. (On THEIR bike not mine! )I never even new what hit me, was going 20 mph and was supposed to stop when they waved me on to. That bike just went left on its side and I went right on mine. Never even had a chance. Riding in the rain was fine, stopping is another thing. Two guys failed even after all that. I just made it, it wasn't easy. Like I said I couldn't get used to the little 250's they had. I am so glad I bought a bigger bike for my first one (The dealer talked me out of a small one when I bought my C50).
The other thing they are big on is "looking where you are going around turns"
It sounds easy but there is something about turning between cones that make you want to look at them. Much easier on the road to do.
Good Luck !!

It costs $180 here. That seems to be the norm for most places. I can't wait to get out there. Unfortunately there's a 50-60% chance for rain all 3 days. CRAP! lol, I've ridden in the rain before though.

Wow - Pennsylvania really spoils us. The MSF Basic, and Experienced courses are free of charge. For the basic they even supply you with the helmet if needed. PA. also offers a free off-street/dirt track course.

I know! I know! You might be the only GSX-R 600 owner at the BRC.

The BRC is pretty nice for non-riders, but when I took it a couple years ago, I already had my license and had ridden a fair amount. The basic stuff is really too basic for people who already ride - if you are riding and you have a bike, you should go with the Experienced riders course and skip a day of "this lever activates the front brake" and duck walking your not-running bike back and forth. They do spend a lot of time explaining the petcock, and lots of time "mastering" the clutch.

Please don't put words into my mouth, my post doesn't say I learned nothing from the BRC and I can't understand how you came to that erroneous conclusion.
