| I use to own a Yamaha XS1100 and was looking at some pic's on this site. They have a wind chill chart that may be usefull on cold weather rides. www.xs11.com/tips/riding/ride4.shtml |

| Except it's the old chart (apparently you start to get warmer if you go faster than 70 mph). The NWS has redone it in recent years. I like how -65 only rates as yellow.

| Found second gear by accident ![]() | I think I'll find the wind chill chart very helpful. I also ride my bike to work early in the morning. Takes me 45 min. without stopping to get there. I have found my limit with my current clothing is 30 degrees or higher. It would help if I wore chaps, or something thicker than jeans. But I just haven't been able to find a shop that has motorcycle clothing for reasonable prices. (If anyone knows a place within an hour or two's drive from Hickory NC, PM me with the address!)

| Well, when you grow up in the northern states it's second nature anyway. We don't need no stinking charts.

| Oh, believe me, it gets quite cold before and after the snow. Heck, some years there is no snow. But there's always 20 below.

| tnichols, go to Wally World, and pick up a pair of the insulated WalMart brand overalls. These are made like the Carhart type with very heavy brown denim. They have zippers from the hip to the cuff, and another zipper down the chest to the crotch. I got a size large enuff to fit over my clothes, and can just step into them in the morning. I zip the legs and chest, and snap the hem snap to keep them closed. I'm nice and warm, and don't get my clothes dirty either. If I ever go down, these should keep the skin on even if they dont' have padding. |

Wow !!! Somebody else that rides the distance I do... I use the Wall's blue insulated "Blizzard Proof" coveralls myself and a pair of Columbia "Bugabootoo" insulated hunting boots rated at -25° and can ride down into the low 30° range myself...140 mile round trip, but it's usually only cold going in at 5:30am. It's back to 60° to 70° on the ride home...Zed | |
