There seems to be some rather strong opinions on this forum with regards to wearing helmets. So, I was just wondering what the breakdown is out there on weather or not you wear a helmet, and if you do, what type, and how often. I prefer to not wear a helmet. My feeling is that I would rather avoid an accident, than try and survive it. I feel that my sense of sight, and hearing are both diminished with that big chunk of plastic on my head. I can only think of a couple of scenarios where if I was given an extra half to full seconds warning I would not be able to avoid a disaster. Now with that being said, I also understand that if I am uncomfortable, I will not be paying as close attention to my driving as I should. So, if it is cold out, or if I am riding a bike that doesn't have a tall enough windshield to protect my eyes from the wind, I do wear a helmet. I don't see much use for anything other that a full coverage helmet, if I am giong to wear one, I want as much protection as I can get. I have been down twice, once with a helmet. I was showing off in a parking lot, doing a wheelie, and the back tire lost traction on some sand. The helmet got banged up prety bad, my head was fine. I'm sure the helmet saved me a trip to the hospital. I rode the bike home. The second time, I was not wearing a helmet. I got rear ended by a cager, the bike was totaled, I never hit my head. I'm not looking to start a fight here, just wondering why you do, or don't wear a helmet. Sorry, it'd kind of long. |
