Bodie ... I agree with your points, but "Helmut" is a German forename.
A Helmet is what protects your head in an accident

Could it be that it is because the bikers were----Oh I don't know wearing HELMETS!

You might not agree with the logic but the fact remains. If you don't know better than to ride without, you're upping the odds that you won't live to meet your grandchildren. Ma Nature is a cruel Biatch and she'll take advantage of any edge we give her.

What does that have to do with the fact that you said helmetless riders should be weeded out of the gene pool? I totally agree that you are increasing the odds of head injury riding without a helmet. I just don't think that they need to be weeded out.

I don't either. They'll take care of the weeding out all by themselves.

I remember about 4 summers ago when I was just starting to do some riding. The thought of a helmet was not apealing to me, but I came up with the idea that if I wear one from day one I probably grow into liking it. Long story short it worked and now I can not stand to not have one on when I ride. That and the wind in my eyes really bothers me so by nature I almost have to wear a full face helmet.

Indeed. I do not have to wear a helmet in Kentucky to be legal, I wear one to protect my head.

There are people, like a few ABATE people, who put out spurious information about helmets being unsafe. These days, even most ABATE people distance themselves from these made up "facts".

I never said that helmetless riders should be weeded out of the gene pool. I said that I look at it as natures way of doing just that.

What I want or what I think should happen isn't really a factor is it...

Sorry if my english isn't clear enough for you.

Rickster....I was coming home one afternoon up around Plymouth on the northern bypass of 94. There was some clown on his "Hawg" wearing some sunglasses, and a pair of cut offs. He had on sandals and that was it. No shirt no helmet, no gloves, and was buzzing along at about 70. Now you know how those frost heaves and cracks are on that road. If he had hit one wrong, it wound be a real pain. I really don't care if you don't wear a helmet, but you should have 1)a signed organ doner card, 2)proof of major medical insurance, 3)a living will.
I am not interested in having to pay for your care in long term nursing home.

Hello, new here to the board and wanted to respond to this thread.
Rickster, the reason the "facts/statistics" might show that there are more head injuries in car wrecks than there are in MC wrecks are simple. There are many more car wrecks than MC wrecks therefore the percentage is greater. Also you must realize that any pole/fact taking being done will almost always be askewed on what the taker wants the end result to portray.

As for wearing a helmet while I ride, always. Fullface. I have been in an accident and had my head hit the pavement first. The helmet definitely saved my life there.

Also, I have always wanted to ask if anyone can actually come up with a viable reason to not wear a helmet. Being cool does not come close. Neither does the hearing and sight thing. I have never had on a helmet, that was meant to be worn, that impaired my vision or hearing. The only one that comes close would be that if you wear a helmet and hit your head a certain way you could snap your neck, Well, I will take my chance on that because if I hit my head hard enough to snap my neck with a helmet on, I think my brains would be splattered all over creation without one.

Oh, nice to meet you all too. This is a great board and I have had great fun reading it.

Welcome to the forum.

Your argument doesn't hold water. Percentage has nothing to do with frequency of occurrance. I'm not saying the statistic is correct (I don't think it is), but a proportion is a proportion, regardless whether the sample is 10 or 10 million.

Because it's frustrating to watch people hurt themselves needlessly, even if we don't know them. Wear your damn helmet!

I'll think about what all of you said over the winter. In any case, I already do wear one of my 5 helmets most of the time.
So it seems like the answer to my question is, most of you wear a helmet most of the time, and some of you do all the time, and none of you never do.
I wonder what kind of an answer I'de get if I asked that question on a Harley chat line Probably wouldn't be able to understand the gramer, or spelling. lol
As for the thing about wearing a helmet in a car, what got me going about that happened at a party. This soccer mom I was talking to, found out that I ride a motorcycle, and her next question was "DO YOU WEAR A HELMET". Than she preceded to give me a lecture. All this from a women that's never been on a bike. I reminded her of the time I saw her driving past my house, going way to fast, talking on a cell phone, with her two kids standing up in the back seat (not belted in). She walked away before I could realy get rolling, so I guess I just wanted to vent.

Now, if you said "I most certainly do wear a helmet! Do you pull over and park your car to talk on your cell phone?" Then proceeded to give her a lecture. This approach only works if you wear your helmet always.

I wear my helmet, always...On the 'zuki, or my mtn bike. Reason...I crashed my mtn bike on the trail one day. I was chargin downhill, probably doin about 20 or so. I hit something that catapulted me *** over. I flew like superman into a tree, head on. Split my helmet in two, right down the middle. I was able to walk out. If that helmet had not been on, I would have most likely been getting an ambulance ride. I cannot even imagine being on a bike that is travelling 70 MPH, and not wearing a helmet. Always, Always, Always. My sister in law is tired of hearing me %%%%% at her for not wearing hers. I won't ride with her unless she wears it, cuz I don't wanna clean up her brains.

Oh, as far as the car thing, there really isn't a risk of head impact in a car. My head has at least 6 inches of clearance all the way around. If I am wearing my seatbelt, then something has to penetrate the windshield or side windows, and still have enough energy to bash my head. Not Bloody likely. If I flip over, I run the risk of having the roof crush me, but a helmet will not stop that from happening. On the bike, all I have to do is fall over at a stop, and hit my head on the curb. My chip will be cashed. Sure, I may survive, but I think I would trade some quality of life for the opportunity. Not worth it in my book.
