Hey, maybe you could form a group and pressure your state lawmakers to enact a helmet law.

Of course, then the local ABATE members would get on your case, and that's not so good. Because they are very int ... uh, interesting individuals.

Actually there was a law in place to wear a helmet in Fla.
It was changed.
Now you have your choice.
Seems to me one should be able to make their own choices in life.
So remember that. When that "accident " does happen and the family members ask what if the helmet was wore would you still be alive.
Kinda like a seat belt. Seen people die with it on and seen people only live because if it.
Seems a little ironic also to see people worried about road rash..high dollar jackets gloves etc...and their melon is unprotected....

I can definatley validate Helmets do work.

Being a geologist, I have expert knowledge that the ground is very hard on the brain housing group "BHG" aka skull. Now my other hobby is racing quad's in Cross Country XC and I can't imagine not ever wearing a helmet at any time, I have bounce off tree's, hit the ground at high speeds and in most cases I have bounced my BHG off of those objects with only minor concussions or nothing at all.....Why because of that helmet. I don't ride my bike thinking I'll never get into a accident, you can do everything you can to avoid them, but there is a thousand other caged nuts out there that want your space and have no problem taking it from you.

The little sticker on my helmet says "Let those who ride decide" That pretty much sums up my stance on helmet laws. I don't care for the government mandating common sense. That being said...

I live in NC. Helmets are mandatory in this state. 20 miles away from the house is the SC line. Helmets are optional there. The only place I even consider not wearing a helmet is rolling down Ocean Blvd. at Myrtle Beach doing 15 mph. Otherwise it's strapped on.

I wear a Bell Drifter. It's slightly bigger than a half shell and has snap in ear covers for cold weather. This seems to give me the best of both worlds. I normally wear sun glasses but I'm tucked behind a windshield. I've tried a few pair of goggles but so far haven't found any that set right on my face. Most give me a headache after just a few miles. I'll get the goggle thing worked out by spring when the windshield comes off.

I look at not wearing a helmet as natures way of weeding out the gene pool.

I have never rode my bike without a helmet, however, I have gotten on the road forgetting to put the flip down... Well, you'll realize it immediately as my eyes are watery from not having the face shield on... well, any longer than that, I would have been squinting or shutting my eyes. If you would wear goggles instead, then I don't see how that is any better. Sunglasses don't work either...

Anyway, it's the law here to wear a helmet... and I wouldn't even consider wearing a 3/4 or half face... I feel that I'm already risking a bit with my modular helmet... I'd get a shoei or arai in the future...

I have two helmets a modular and a half shell. Trips to the store and the shop (depending on the weather) I wear the half shell, all other times it is the Modular.

What happens in Daytona stays in Daytona!!

Here we go again.
Pinhy - *sniff sniff* That's the smartest thing you said in a while on this subject. Get out there and buy yourself a new expensive fullface and you'll want to wear it since you spent the money on it.

Tim - I'll pray for your friend (I just started going back to church lately, 4 weeks in a row , hey I like the music) But if there was a law he wouldn't be in a coma and I'm sure you don't want him weeded out of the gene pool.

NC Boulevard - the problem with the gene pool logic is that not all people that don't wear one are in need of being weeded out. I would hate to see a smart individual that probably has a lot to offer this world, be weeded out due to the fact that he made the wrong choice.

All - Why not take each law on it's own merits instead of calling it legislation of common sence. Not wearing a helmet can affect others. Road debris to the head can cause multiple vehicle accidents.

Guess what - I wear a helmet always , and it is law throughout the facist country of Canada.

Here's the details on the accident and the results:

Mike was a very competent and experienced rider, but as a human being he was less than perfect and did not avoid this accident.

Thanks for all the input. Remember, I'm not trying to get anyone to stop wearing a helmet. I wear one a lot of the time myself, for example, I always wear one when riding my Mountain bike, Snowmobile, ATV, Dirt bikes, or V-Strom, and I always wear my seatbelt when in a car or truck.
Most, not all, but most accidents happen when all parties involved are not paying attention. I feel that I am more aware of what's going on arround me when I don't have a helmet on.
I have a second question, and remember, I'm not trying to start an argument. Do any of you wear a helmet when driving your car? If you get in an accident on your bike, the part of your body most likely to be hurt is your legs, in a car it's your head. Seems like wearing a helmet in your car would be just as, if not more important. You seem like a good bunch of guys, and gals, so don't take this the wrong way, I know I'm risking swating a hornets nest here, but I'm not trying to start a fight, I just want to understand the difference. I have been riding for 30 some years, and no one has ever been able to explain this to me.

Could've fooled me..... . Naw,, I am glad you were wearing your helmet when you laid down that bike of Rae's. I would've hated to think you might have skinned up your little baby face!!!!!!!

Just Kidding,,, I can vouch for both,, being one that has had NUMEROUS accidents where what saved my A$$ was the seatbelt and being the one who has been able to throw a DR350 into the tree tops and smacking my head a couple of times.

Until you can say you had to cut your bike out of a tree top,, then you can't say you have riden!!!!

You don't need a helmet in a passenger car because your head is protected by the roof. That is why yo don't need to wear a helmet when riding a BMW C1. That, plus the airbag, which should protect your face from hitting anything hard, will prevent injuries in most cases. If you are racing (Indy, CART, rally, etc.), you need a helmet because the other safety features (airbag, etc.) have been removed, and there is alot more metal around your head.

What do you mean? A hockey helmet and a tea towel around your neck to catch the drool. I'm sorry that was really bad.

This is really weak. Is your M50 somehow much more safer than your VStrom and other bikes / toys? Choosing not to wear a helmet because you can avoid accidents is just stoopid. Be honest, you don't wear a helmet because you think its not cool on a cruiser. Trying to justify it as somehow safer no to wear a helmet is truly offensive. But as long as you can fool yourself.....
