Default Horn replacement

Anyone know how many dB the stock horns on the SV650S produce?

I might look into replacing my horn. I know the FIAMM Freeway Blaster produce 130dB and the Stebel Nautilus 139dB. Keep in mind that the sound energy doubles for every 3dB so 139dB is 8 times the energy of 130dB.

I also saw this train/diesel horn which could be cool! Although people then wouldn't expect a motorcycle...

I'm not sure, but I imagine that anything over 90 dB would not be allowed over here. My alarm system has a 130 dB siren, but I can't imagine that that would be allowed for a horn.

Louis
Put yourself or your wife in a cage, when all of a sudden a train or large rig horn goes off behind you.
It may cause more accidents than it prevents. Although some of them may only require the use of a washing machine.

I don't know how many dB the stock horn on the M50 puts out, but I think it sound like someone stepped on a mouse. I have also been looking at that Fiamm Freeway blaster. About a week ago I was riding two-up with my wife and an old grey haired lady turned left in front of us at an intersection. She never looked and never saw us. I hit the brakes and got on the horn, but she didn't even react. As soon as we stopped my wife said "you need a louder horn." That sounds like a free pass to order that puppy. Next time maybe we won't be the only ones needing a washing machine.

I remember seeing something on one of the other forums somewhere. The guy had gone to NAPA and bought a regular car horn for $12.00 or something. It put out about 130dBA. He said he was able to mount it on his scooter with no problems. Should be able to put it on the down tube with a hose clamp or something. I met a guy once that had the little air horns on his bike. Used a small on demand compressor like the Dukes of Hazzard.

I got a chrome diaphram horn from JC Whitney (I think). Its 120 Db. Loud as hell. Hurts your ears. 139 Db is like make your ears bleed loud. Wowzers. If I had that, I would have to start riding with earplugs in my full face.

[edit] I just thought I would mention that in the states, OSHA advises hearing protection in industrial areas louder than 85 Db, and requires it in areas above 90....

I replaced the stock horn on my '03 Marauder. I found a super-loud (130 dB or so) car horn at AutoZone for less than $20. It looks identical to the stock horn and bolted right on. Even the electrical connectors were the same. It isn't chrome, but they did have some others that were.

How would one measure it? Is there measuring equipment available, or would one need to have it tested at a roadworthy centre?

I think it's usually measured 4 feet from the source, using a decibel meter of course.

LOUIS ! just pulled the stock horn on my VZ 800, Marauder. Stamped that it was rated at 105 db, as a comp figure. Bought and tried the Blaster (low tone) rated at 130 db. Doesn't impress me at all, still shoppin'. Let me know if you find one to make you happy.

Just noted today while shopping for other goodies that Meijers has the Blaster for just under $12. Maybe K-mart does too ? ? My trial and error system has suggested that the existing horn circuitry may not handle the higher current draw of the higher db horn meaning it may require an isolating or load switching relay whose coil current (I hope) will be tolerated by the orig horn ckt.

I always replace the horns on my bikes. Stock horns are pathetic. I find the ten dollar 120db ones at the auto stores are very loud. And if you beep it in your garage it hurts.

Have just about finished the mod. Ended up with hi and lo tone Blasters (@132 db ea) used switching relay with fused power leg. Mounted on the original bracket. Satisfied with the test toot we gave it today. Now just tie it in place and cover up.

There is not a db limit on horns in the US. There are specific places that they do not want you go use your horn. Mainly cities. As for the 66070 (TRAIN/DIESEL HORN) yes too big and not enough db.
