Default Successful Harvest Rally

Rode the local Harvest Rally yesterday. 512 miles in 12 hours. It was the first organized competetive event I've participated in, and I had a great time.

For those who don't know what a rally is, you get a list of possible destinations along with their point values. You have to plan a route to hit as many points as possible in the least time. We were all over central MN, and we caught the corners of ND and SD. We were close enough to WI that we should've stopped there, too, but we made a few rookie mistakes and didn't.

Lessons learned:
1. Plan realistically. We worked out a route that probably covered 8-900 miles. 4 hours in we had to pare it down considerably, which lowered our points-per-mile ratio.

2. Allow a time buffer. The event ended at 7 pm, with a 25 point penalty for every minute thereafter to 7:30, after which you DNF. We got out of SD at 5:20 pm and hit the finish in Sartell, MN at 7:19. A hectic two hour scramble and 475 points lost.

3. Leave the local destinations until you get back, then pick up as many as you can. We hit several on the way out of town, but they're lower in value. We should have made our miles, then gotten back early enough to avoid tardiness penalties and pick up a few more points.

It was a great ride, and my second longest day on the Bandit (or any bike). The B ran beautifully (and afforded me a nice speed fix out in the wheat fields of ND). I'll definately be doing more of that type of thing (the rally, not the speed fix ).
