Default Security

Hello Dear Fello Riders.

My house is an apartment studio. Recently I bought my first bike, but I am little scared to leave it outside due to thieves or haters. We have a regular (not dangerous but not too safe) neigborhood. Oh by the way I live in Boston area.

Funny thing but, I loaded my big ass GSXR on the elevator and put it in my living room for now or at least til I get some good strong chain and cover.

I just wanted to as you how dangerous is to leave your bike outside?
What do you do when you go visit a friend?
Or what are you suggestions as far as bike-security is concern?

I dont know if you have the room outside your building, but in the uk you can get a steel box just big enough for a bike, they are quite hard to get into if you are a thief and are even insurance approved.
A good lock, and a good alarm cant do any harm either.

Do your best to secure it to a structure or the ground, using bike specific cables and/or chains. A disc lock will only stop it from rolling. The box sounds cool if you have a place for it.

I once saw a van pull up, 3 guys get out, pick up a bike(wouldn't roll, disc locks), set it in the van and drive away. All while the owner watched from the coffee shop across the street!

Default Security?

Storage outside is always a problem. I am lucky enoupg to have ample storage to safely lock away my bike. Even under a cover and with the bike secured to a post, that can not keep it from being tamperd with. The box sounds cool. Lets face it, it a theif wants it bad enouph, they will find a way. I knew of a guy who would park his bike against a wall and pull his truck right up to it at night. I always wondered how it was he never ran into the bike. Parking it in you living room in an apartmrnt building may get camplaints evetualy. I would have to say insurance is you only proctection from theift. Sad but true.

I have a set of Bike cuffs I bough from my local shop. i use them while in transit. I keep the bike in a garage for overnights and off season. The extra $75 bucks a month is worth it. And the insurance company asked about permanently installed anti theft devces and garage keeping.
