Default Carbs

I know very little about carbs, but I do have a Clymer, and all the signs (slightly darker than normal plugs; mild backfiring) say that it is running rich. I need to adjust the main jet. Is there any advice that I should take going in?

A bike that new should not be running rich.

Main jets are not "adjustable", in the normal sense of the word.
What do you think might be causing it to run rich?
Checked the air filter and inlet for restriction?

I'd try carb. cleaner first......and everything else easy.....before you consider tearing the carbs apart to change the jets. Even a trip to the shop would probably be easier and cheaper in the long run.
