| What happens is people try to shift too fast and apply power before the dogs on the gears are engaged far enough and they slip apart. This causes rounding of the edges of the dogs that makes it happen even easier the second time. If the engine revs high with the gears slipping while the fork is trying to force them together, the fork and groove get hot quickly and wear out too. Pretty soon the gears won't stay engaged at all. I replaced a gear and a fork in my V65 Magna transmission when I bought it 2 years ago. The previous owner told me it slipped out of second gear and I had read that is a common problem. It also needed exhaust repairs and I didn't even ride it until after it was all fixed. You have to remove the engine and split the case to fix this. It is a big complex job. You will probably need a manual. Honda Stuff You may find the parts on eBay or a store like crotchrocket .com. You may need to replace the shifting drum too. Mine was not that bad so I reused it. Parts will cost several hundred dollars, if you can find them. It is possible to leave the heads on and avoid buying head gaskets, but it is tricky. You have to pull the cam chain tensioners out the top and make sure the chains don't skip any links so the cams stay in time. The manual won't tell you how to do this. It will say remove the heads. There are some seals and o-rings that should be replaced while the engine is torn down to avoid future trouble. The bike is worth the work, if you can do it. It is a real rush to ride fast and a comfortable long distance cruiser too. I strongly recommend putting radial tires on it. That makes them ride a lot smoother and handle a lot better. You might want to do some research on v4hondabbs.com |

| Hi all, I notice you say this is a fairly common problem. I bought a new M109R a few months ago and have the exact same thing happening. It pops out of 2nd if I put any torque at all on it. Is this likely a bent fork and if so, is there any recourse with Suzuki. I spoke to Suzuki hoping they would help with the repair and all they did was p*ss of my dealer (who is now kind of po'd at me too. Any advice would be appreciated. FWIW, I ride pretty conservatively -- almost never make jack rabbit starts and never race or otherwise abuse the bike. |
