You know it. Im planning to be in North Carolina in a couple of weeks and there might be some snow. If that is the case, Ive never driven on that stuff, so it could get real interesting. Suggestions on a newbie driving in those conditions, if it does snow and stick?

Have you ever skied ?

It's sort of like skiing in that you don't actually have a solid contact patch with the road and the best you can hope for is a controlled skid. Allow for extra stopping room and keep speeds down. Must be smooth with controls, to turn from a stop keep front wheels pointed straight until you're moving then begin your turn with a steady throttle ( letting up on gas car will stop, giving it too much gas will keep the car moving straight rather than turning ).

Slight wheel spinning is OK but keep it to a minimum. If it skids allways keep the front wheels pointed in the direction you want to go. Allow for sideways movement don't get too close to anything on either side of you.

The above would be for a snow covered road, if the road is just wet then drive as if it was raining but keep in mind that the line between wet and frozen is thin. Of course the fact that you won't have proper winter tires will make driving a very dicey proposition, figure your stopping distances as being multiplied by up to 5 or 6 times.

Fun things to encounter are glare ice under the snow, and black ice which is a very thin layer of ice that looks like dry or wet asphalt until you actually try to stop.

Its 106 miles to Chicago. We have a full tank of gas, half a pack of cigarettes, its dark and we're wearing sunglasses.

Hey, psycho, we're not getting back together. Now get out of my Van Halen t-shirt before you jinx the band and they break up.

I was parked in a car pointing downhill. Blizzard outside. A moron in a Landrover Freelander drives past us. He puts his indicator on to turn right, but he is going downhill and too fast. He slides past the turn, hits the brakes, and the wheels locked and he just kept on sliding. It was so funny!

Blizzard in South Africa ???

Actually the trick he should of used, is to initiate the turn with his parking brake, locking the back wheels momentarily the back end would of swung around and when pointed in the new direction he wanted to go to hit the gas.

We got 8" of snow in Philly. Temps in the low 20's F. wicked mix, my car was grounded for a day. At least public transit is pretty good here and it's convenient. I'm riding somewhere as soon as we thaw. They predict rain and temps in the 40's later this week so we should have clear roads for the weekend

I think it's really relative. We get from 99F to -5F in the same year sometimes. In late summer when we get the first cool evening we say its cold, then 50's make 60's seem hot etc. I'm waiting for late Feb. we usually get a week of heat wave in the upper 40's. People go out in shorts tank tops and general summer gear. That's probably going to be the first riding week. But I think we adapt to such a wide range of temps and get used to it. If you lived here you would probably be riding right along with us.

-5F hell that's shorts weather up here in febuary, try - 35 to -40 ( -40 is the same in farenheit and celcius ). Just breathing in can be painfull. Some areas in Quebec had a 50 cm of snow ( thats over a foot and a half of snow and actually because of the way they mesure snowfall (they remove air), snow can actually be almost twice as deep ?) this weekend.

In Montreal we had a couple inches but it was so windy that it was coming down sideways at a balmy 8 degrees F.

If I ever saw those readings on a temp. gauge, I wouldnt know what to do.

I will be in North Carolina this coming weekend and the temps are forecasted to be in the upper 20's and low 30's. Yikes! That is freakin cold for this Florida boy!!

The temps here in Florida have warmed back up into the 70's during the day and low 50's at night. I can tolerate those temps at night. Last night on the news, they did a long range forecast and it looks like the middle of December it will be down in the 40's at night and staying there for awhile.

Need to clean up and fire up the fireplace and get some heat going!!!
