Default choke warming

OK some quick questions. Is it OK to warm your bike with the choke on? How about sans choke but with a little throttle?

The sacred and holy(yes redundant) owners manual says leave the choke on to start the bike and turn it off after 5 seconds. Let the bike idle until at acceptable operating temperatures. The "problem" is that can take 5 minuts in the morning and I'm impatient and don't esactly want to leave the bike in my driveway with a key in it.
So can I leave the choke on until it is awarm enough to ride? If it is OK is there any kind of damage being done to the bike?

If so, does it damage the bike to have the choke off but to throttle it at 3K rpm to let it warm up faster(sportbike)?

Thanks!
