I'll offer a counterpoint to that - my first week in Basic back in 1971 I volunteered for one thing that was the best decision I have ever made: AIRBORNE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Seriously - back then pay for a lowly E1 was $78 per month - jump pay added an additional $55 per month to that! And passing Jump School and getting assigned to the 82nd Airborne Division makes you part of one of the best groups in the Army - you get to look down on all those "legs" forever

begging your pardon, sir, but didn't all those guys from "easy company" think they were going to get out of running all over heck only to find out.

they had to run all over heck anyway.

and dig in at some god forbidden town called bastogne.

but it's always good to aim a bit higher and go for the gold.

do well wuby, and good luck.

Bravo Wuby.

The best bit of advice for basic, I can give is to..

1. Keep your head down and not get noticed.

2. Do whatever you are told, when you are told, without question.

3. Remember Basic is only a handful of weeks long and life is so much different once you become operational.

I don't know about your forces, but we only started being treated like living entities once we had finished Basic and moved onto trade training, then we got treated like human beings, when we became operational.

After all that I stuck it for 27 years and wouldn't change it for the world.

So here's to you mate!

I was never in the military myself, but from what I've heard, basic can be very different, depending upon which branch of the service you're in.

From what I've heard, basic training is the hardest for the Marines and the Army. The DI's job is to 'break' the newbies, much like a trainer 'breaks' a young horse so that it accepts the saddle and rider. I've heard that it's a physical torture and an emotional rollercoaster.

I haven't heard much about Navy or Air Force basic training, but the way that the jugheads snicker about it, it must be much easier...

It goes Marines, Army, Navy, Air Force. Hardest/longest to easiest/shortest.

If I were to chose a branch of the military, my natural laziness would probably lead me to the National Guard. I assume that their basic training involves drinking lots of beer and trying not to get shot by a buddy.

Ohhh, ok. yeah, I was in Aviation Ord. when I was in the Navy on the ship. EOD is good because if and when you get out you can work as a contractor w/ the USN or whatever doing the same thing. They get paid.....

You probably already know this.

Good luck!

Fair well my friend, and thank you for your service. The best advise that I can give you is don't listen to all the advise that others give you. Do what is best for you, nobody can tell what's best for you except you. You'll know what decision to make when the time comes.
