LOL...I remember going to the track a week before basic.

Took the girlfriend with me and a blanket...since I figured I would be working out for a while that day.

As it turns out I found myself collapsed into a ball fighting to get air into my lungs after a near half-way trip around a 1/4 mile track.

I was a big time smoker then...and remember pulling my pack of smokes out of my sock, so I could light up while I was on the ground waiting to recover.

After the first 2 weeks of basic and lord knows how many tubes of bengay...I was a lean mean fighting machine. I was running 2.5 miles 4 days a week & then the fifth day was a 5 mile run....and I felt good doing it.

Yeah...those days are gone now.

I thought Wuby was going to Gordon College in Barnesville? Did he just decide that he wanted to do something different or did he already graduate from his class?

The last three or four weeks in Gordon he began thinking about it. Then made his decision based on 1.His goal in life 2.The economy 3.The possibility of a future retirement with benefits 4.He would get to blow s**t up for a living.

He spoke with me and a friend of mine (who is an active E7) before he actually set the ball rolling.

I think he made a well thought out (pros and cons) decision.

And thanks for everyone's support and well wishes.

good luck wuby; you're going to need nerves of steel.

although I see this as a field where more and more robots are going to be used, and good thing too.

Good luck Wuby

Make sure to volunteer for everything you can in basic.

DI's like to be corrected, it shows you are paying attention.

DI's are flattered by impersonations.

Make sure to bring a stuffed animal or something to put on your bed, it shows individuality.

Seriously, things to get you targeted.

Do not get a buzz cut, or show up with long hair.

If you wear anything but briefs, get you some new underwear.

Do not volunteer for anything. The better the assignment sounds, the worse it is.

Above all, the longer the DI does not know your name, the better you are.

I am a little stinker trying to get him in hot water before he even gets to basic

I still smile when I think of basic, but don't want to do it again.

First meal while in basic training....

I'm sitting there mixing my little packet of thousand island dressing, thinking this isn't so bad. The food looks good & the Drill's seem to be OK so far.

And then it happened. Just as I squoze a bit too hard on the salad dressing, a drill was walking by in his best pressed Class A's.

He wasn't too impressed with the 6 inch long slather of white salad dressing that had just "flung" itself onto his jacket.

I did more pushups that class than the entire platoon together. He would wait outside every building I went in and after every meal or church service. He would take the time out of drilling his platoon to walk over where mine was training...and had me give him 20, each and every time.

After a while, it became kind of a fun thing...me waiting to see if he would be there...and he always was.

Hitting 2,000 pushups before breakfast was a daily occurence. Don't worry, you get used to it.
